GROW COOK NOURISH: A Kitchen Garden Companion in 500 Recipes by the “Julia Child of Ireland,” Darina Allen, is a treasure for gardeners and cooks alike.  I have had the good fortune to visit Ballymaloe, to walk through the amazing gardens, and then to sample the delicious dishes.  This book takes you through an extensive list of vegetables, herbs and fruits. Each entry includes explanations of different varieties, practical information on cultivation, growing and maintenance, plus instructions for the best ways to cook produce as well as preserve and utilize an overabundance.  The over 500 recipes, including dishes for each ingredient, are exciting and fun especially with the promise of Spring.

THE NEW VEGAN: Great Recipes, No-Nonsense Advice and Simple Tips by food blogger Áine Carlin is a nice compilation of creative plant-based recipes to start you on your way to healthful but tasty eating.  Becoming vegan is not easy, but even if you use a few of these recipes in your menus, it will be a step in the right direction.  Interesting ideas include: tofu ricotta toast; Thai-inspired spiralized salad; miso-marinated mushrooms; quinoa tabbouleh with harissa dressing; and spiced molasses bundt bread.

BOWLS OF GOODNESS: Vibrant Vegetarian Recipes Full of Nourishment by food blogger Nina Olsson combines mix of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free recipes in some creative bowl food ideas such as the green queen with poached egg and smashed avocado toast with miso and carrot dressing; white gazpacho with chilled cucumber, avocado, ginger, and coconut soup; rainbow pad Thai with almost-raw rainbow carrot noodles, toasted cashews, and spicy tofu; and chai vanilla pears with pears poached in chai and red wine.

SWEET POTATO SOUL: 100 Easy Vegan Recipes for the Southern Flavors of Smoke, Sugar, Spice, and Soul by Jenné Claiborne is a plant-based take on classic soul food.  The author grew up in Atlanta eating heavy Southern dishes and has translated that love of her food culture into her own vegan style.  Standouts include fluffy sweet potato biscuits; peach cobbler breakfast muffins; jalapeño hush puppies; smoky black-eyed pea cakes; and caramelized coconut grilled peaches.
