Tomatensalat is a German version of Tomato Salad, ideally paired with casseroles or roasts. Tomatoes arrived in Germany in the mid-eighteenth century. This simple recipe is one of the originals.

Tomatensalat (Tomato Salad)

Ingredients
  • 5 tomatoes; medium, chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon basil; dried
  • 1/4 teaspoon thyme; dried
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper; freshly ground
  • 1/2 Cup vegetable oil
  • 6 Tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 onion; large, diced
Instructions
  1. Blend all ingredients together and chill for 1 hour before serving.
  2. Optionally, serve on lettuce leaves.
