The wonderful texture, strong body yet lightness of a good cornbread such as this all-time classic is complemented by the exceptional flavor it provides. Perfect with a dab of soft butter or on the plate to soak up a good chicken gravy.

Old Time Cornbread
Recipe type: Breads and Rolls
Serves: 1 batch
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 Cups cornmeal
  • 1 Cup flour
  • 1 1/2 Cups buttermilk
  • 3/4 teaspoon soda
  • 3 Tablespoons lard, melted
  1. Beat eggs, milk, and lard together. Add remaining ingredients and mix well.
  2. Pour into greased 11" X 7" X 2" and bake in hot (400 degrees F.) oven about 30 minutes.
