New York is such an international city that each nationality's cuisine tends to cross over into another's. Here, good Jewish rye bread pairs with Irish corned beef and German mustard to make a delicious sandwich.

Serves: 4 sandwiches
  • 1 pound sliced leftover corned beef
  • rye bread, thick sliced and hearty (with or without caraway)
  • mustard
  1. Slice the leftover corned beef cold. Place it on a dish and heat (over a bain marie, by microwave or covered in the oven).
  2. Spread mustard on one side of open-face rye bread (two slices per sandwich).
  3. Layer the warmed corned beef and close the sandwich. Cut in half with a sharp knife. Do not press down on the sandwich to hold it while cutting.
  4. Serve.
  5. Optional side dishes include coleslaw, pickles, French fries, or potato chips.
