Branston pickle, really a relish, is a favorite condiment on the British table. Used as an accompaniment or on sandwiches with cheese or cold, poached chicken or fish, the rich flavor enhances plain foods, giving a complete, wonderful change of taste.

Garden Relish (Branston Pickle)
Recipe type: Pickles
Serves: 12 Cups
  • 1 Cup chopped cucumbers
  • 1 Cup chopped stoned dates
  • 1 Cup chopped green peppers
  • 1 Cup chopped cabbage
  • 1 Cup chopped onion
  • 1 Cup green tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 Cup chopped carrots
  • 1 Cup chopped celery
  • 2 Cups vinegar
  • 2 Cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons turmeric
  • 2 teaspoons mustard seed
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  1. Soak cucumbers and tomatoes in salt water while grinding the rest. Drain.
  2. Mix everything and boil for 20 minutes.
  3. Fill clean, sterile bottles and seal.
