President Tyler's Puddin' Pies

  • 16 pastry shells, 2 1/2 inch round
  • 1/2 Cup butter; softened
  • 3/4 Cup sugar
  • 3/4 Cup sugar, dark brown; firmly packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 Cup half-and-half
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • nutmeg, ground
  • cream, whipped
  1. Bake pastry shells at 350 degrees for 4 to 5 minutes; set aside.
  2. Combine butter and sugar, creaming until light and fluffy. Add eggs, half-and-half, and vanilla; beat well.
  3. Spoon filling into pastry shells, and sprinkle lightly with nutmeg.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or until set (filling will settle while cooling).
  5. At serving time, top with whipped cream and sprinkle lighty with nutmeg or chocolate shavings (as shown in the photo).
Make pie shells using fluted or cylindrical tart moulds available at most gourmet kitchenware stores or online.

Remember, Tippecanoe and Tyler Too was the political cache phrase that elected President Tyler - equally as ambiguous as some of the phrases we hear today on television, don't you think?
