Leroy Comrie has a plan. He wants to ban toys in fast food meals which exceed 500 calories. Mr. Comrie, the Deputy Majority Leader of the New York City Council has proposed legislation seeking to limit the use of toys to attract children’s interest in such things as “Happy Meals” that contain excessive calories.
He’s a portly fellow himself, weighing in at about 335 pounds, but that’s precisely his point. He loves fast food, but it does him no good eating such things. His opinion seems to be that if children start eating the higher caloric meals early, their fate is set to become obese and suffer from diabetes, heart conditions and strokes far too soon in their lives.
Mr. Comrie has a valid point, so while each of the major newspapers in New York City has criticized him, we applaud him, for at least being aware of the impact that high caloric fast food meals can have on children. In truth, his plan is actually sound, fair and responsible and far more important than Chicago’s ridiculous ban on foie gras.
“If local government is going to take a role in keeping us healthy, this is the way to do it.” Our publisher and our entire editorial staff believe that Mr. Comrie is on to something and we hope that other cities and states pick up the mantle and carry it forth.
He believes, as we do, that when a child is attracted to the toy, they’ll eat the healthier meal to get the toy. Parents too, should demand that the fast food companies provide toys only in healthy meals.
While one cannot successfully legislate morality, one can use legislation to establish sensible guidelines for corporate behavior, which in turn translates to human behavior. And as for those New York newspapers who called him fat, well, we might point out that calling someone fat is not much different than bullying and calling someone a racial epithet. It’s inappropriate.
If more city councils, alders, town committees and borough councils joined Mr. Comrie’s commendable movement, perhaps we could reduce the spread of weight-related disease in the United States in reasonable time. Not to mention having fewer pudgy kids.
