It was built in the 1880’s, yet it has all the modern conveniences of a contemporary construction. Its decor is an eclectic mixture of Victorian and Georgian, with a few notes of Art Nouveau and an occasional modern bit here and there. With old world charm and elegance, you are treated to an exceptionally fine time at The Gables in Beach Haven, NJ.

Sondra, the owner and designer of this elegant B&B, has put every bit of her creative soul into the decor of her property. At every turn, a unique detail surprises you, like the live jazz on Sundays for Brunch, or the player piano when the musician’s not around. The Inn is well worth a trip from New York or Philadelphia to enjoy this charming hostelry.

I had the opportunity to dine there on Sunday night with a very good friend from Austria and her 2 year old son. Sitting in a Victorian porch serving as a dining room, we enjoyed an absolutely exquisite meal prepared by Executive Chef Paul R. Simon. Running a spotlessly clean kitchen, and preparing everything from breakfast through dinner, Chef Paul does it from the heart, a fact which is clearly evidenced in the food he prepares.

Tristan, the youngster enjoyed a plate of Gnocchi, made perfectly light with a slightly spicy sauce. His Mom enjoyed a simply beautiful and tasty Fried Artichoke salad to start, while I relished an absolutely delightful variation of French Onion soup, with Gruyere croutons floating on top. Seriously delish. Even the bread, homemade, was a heart-filled flavor extravaganza.

Our main courses were a Grilled Tilapia and for me, a stuffed breast of chicken with risotto. Heavenly – on both counts. Our young diner companion relished the fresh, homemade Rasbperry sorbet and Cinnamon ice cream, while his Mother and I shared a warm Pecan and Chocolate Cake with an optional scoop of Chef Paul’s homemade Banana ice cream.

Five Crowns AwardThis intensely flavorful meal was, to say the least, on a parallel with what you’d expect in a luxury hotel in Europe. It’s just a little pricey for the Jersey Shore, but still, a must visit dining experience for any gourmand within 500 miles. Seriously. We’re rating it Five Crowns.

There’s a tasting menu that has me licking my lips for my next visit. I can hardly wait.
