The Chinese call the Longan “Dragon’s Eye” because when cut open, it looks like an eye, with a dark color center, an opalescent berry and hard shell outside.  They’re quite tasty, but often used in making juices and syrups.

Longan Juice
Longans are often called lychees and are sold primarily in Chinese markets around the world. The juice is best when made and used fresh, but is delicious on its own or mixed in cocktails with things like rum, coconut liqueur and other tropical liqueurs.
Recipe type: Juices
Serves: 4
  • 6 Cups water
  • 1 packages dried longans (2 1/2 ounces); available at Asian markets
  • 1 1/2 Cups sugar
  1. Simmer 20 minutes.
  2. Stir in sugar.
  3. Chill thoroughly, 1 hour.
  4. Pour over ice and serve immediately.
This recipe yields 4 servings. Each serving: 294 calories; 1 mg sodium; 0 cholesterol; 0 fat; 76 grams carbohydrates; 0 protein; 0 fiber.
