Measuring SpoonsIn American recipes, when quantities are stated as spoons, ‘level’ spoons are meant. European recipes and some found on this site may call for rounded (neither level, nor over heaped or heaping) spoons, unless specifically stated otherwise. Also, American ‘spoons’ are standard cook’s measuring spoons, whereas European ‘spoons’ tend to be any available kitchen or eating spoons. When you come across any recipe by our European writers, assume the use of the European spoon measure.

The best plan is to regard 2 American teaspoons or tablespoons as 1 English teaspoon or tablespoon. Dessertspoons are not often called for in recipes, but one dessert spoon is the equivalent of 2 teaspoons or half a tablespoon.
