Bourbon is an American whiskey made from at least 51 percent corn, plus other grains. Aged for at least 2 years in oak barrels, it has a smoky, slightly sweet flavor and a rich caramel color. Named for the French Royal family, when France ruled the Louisiana Territory, of which Kentucky was part, having been settled by French traders in the 17th century. Bourbon whiskey was created in Kentucky.
