The Epicurus Crowns

How we apply them and what they mean

Epicurus.com editors evaluate each property and rate each lodging experience based on overall quality, the range of facilities and the level of services offered by the establishment. For dining experiences, we evaluate the quality of service, decor, and overall experience and the caliber, quality and freshness of the food as well as presentation and taste. The size, age and overall appeal of the establishment are considered as well as regional decorating, and architectural differences. Additionally, we factor into our evaluation regional variables that may affect services and amenities.

While services are an important factor in all our ratings, they are particularly crucial at the Four and Five Crown categories. Properties must provide a high level of service, on a consistent, timely basis to be qualified for these categories.

Five Crowns

These properties reflect the characteristics of the ultimate in luxury and sophistication. Accommodations are first-class or cuisine is of superior quality. The physical amenities of the property are extraordinary in every manner. The fundamental qualifications of this category are to meticulously serve and exceed all guest expectations while maintaining an impeccable standard of excellence. Many personalized services and amenities enhance an unmatched level of comfort.

Four Crowns

Establishments awarded Four Crowns are upscale in all areas. Accommodations are definitively more refined and stylish. Physical attributes reflect an obvious enhanced level of quality throughout. Cuisine is stylish and artistically presented. Principal qualifications of this category include an extensive array of amenities combined with a huge degree of hospitality, service and attention to detail.

Three Crowns

These properties appeal to the traveler with comprehensive needs. Properties provide multiple services and activities with a distinguished style, including considerable upgrades in the quality of physical attributes, amenities and level of comfort provided.

Two Crowns

These properties appeal to the traveler seeking more than basic accommodations. There are modest enhancements to the overall physical attributes, design elements and amenities of the facility, typically at a modest price. Cuisine is average, but well presented and moderately priced.

One Crown

For the budget minded traveler, these properties pvided no-frills, basic accommodations. Basic requisites for comfort, cleanliness and hospitality are provided. Cuisine is below acceptable standards.

NO CROWN

Though our Crown awards come in five grades, there really is a sixth, unofficial grade, that of "no crown". We judge these properties, whether lodging or dining venues to be unacceptable and recommend to our readers that they be avoided.
