Customer Rating: Summary: Good but not great Comment: First thing to say is that this book is unweildy. It's huge (29cm square) and heavy so just getting it about in the kitchen or trying to prop it up can be challenging. I'm going to be the voice of dissent. I was a bit disappointed with this. I knew it was unlike Keller's other offerings so that's not the problem. I was just rather uninspired by the contents. Also the American weights and measures (it's all cups or ounces or sticks etc) is irritating in the end - and ingredients; Canola oil, Fleur de sel, Kosher salt, yes we can work out what they are or get equivalents... yada yada. I just expected to want to get cracking on more of the recipes. Some sound good, fig stuffed pork loin and the chicken soup mentioned in another review looks beautiful in the photo. It's a lovely book to look at and it has some good cookery techniques - do I think it will be a well thumbed addition to my cookery library - sadly no.
Customer Rating: Summary: Thomas Keller shows another side........ Comment: I have been an admirer of Thomas Keller for a long time. His restaurant books are beautifully photographed and as a chef his attention to detail is second to none. In Ad Hoc, none of his attention to detail is sacrificed and anyone with an interest in cooking would be able to follow these receipies to their conclusion. However this is not a book for anyone who wants 'meals in minutes'. You will need to invest a reasonable amount of time in nearly all the recipies in this book, it's food you make for people you love and want to nuture. It's not food for skinny minnies!
Customer Rating: Summary: 'Pleasant' book. Comment: Good quality book, very nicely put together and some great tips throughout. It really is about family meals that are to be shared, rather than recipes that can be beautifully plated. Enjoyable to just sit and read.
Customer Rating: Summary: Brady book review on ad hoc at home Comment: beautiful book great recipes well worth the money buy it , enjoy!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Casual Keller Comment: Thomas Keller is a perfectionist in the kitchen and this shows in 'Ad Hoc...', as in his other food bibles. 'Family-style' does not indicate ease of execution. It should rather be understood as 'not Michelin Star / French top-bistro' food to be served for loved ones when time permits. For a seasoned home-chef the book is a great inspiration into Keller's American take on European classics. It is a great introduction into American food classics but with a sense of thought and a quality mindset to it so you actually want to prepare and eat the food.
