Comment: ...judging by the fact that one of the most helpful reviews of this album is a negative one my assumption was either Slipknot went through a big change of style or they just mellowed out so much these supposed "maggots" just got bored and listened to IOWA all over again...surprisingly what I found was a lot of maturity from this band...they may have lost some of that edge that made them stand out...but in my opinion the style they have adopted now is much more complex if slightly more structured...but it's a very mixed bag...
.execute. 7/10: I tried to find a sample of this track and I got Rick-Rolled...it was hilarious...overall this is your usual bog-standard short Slipknot intro track with lots and lots of random sound effects shoved through a machine...nothing really special at all...besides the drum solo near the end of course...Joey really has grown alot since the debut by retaining his skill...somehow...
Gematria (The Killing Name)8/10: Starts off with another riff...this time not downtuned and much more noticeable...after playing around with the riff until we're bored the drums think "HEY!! I'll make it interesting!!" And play lots of double bass and then he doesn't stop while Corey sings...his low scream has now turned more into a random low rant...which doesn't have as much power as his previous incarnations...but the rest of the instruments have improved...so it doesn't matter...the guitar solo this time is beyond the average players ability (that being if they were self taught)...but it was surprising...that solo was bizarrely acessible and listenable for Slipknot...I think the people are right...they really are d/evolving...drums fantastic...guitar better...vocals losing interest...
Sulfur 8/10: Starts off with some good drumming and we have yet another riff...this time alternate picked switched between another 2 note riff...Corey is really starting to kill these songs...his vocals are just plain irritating now...which is a shame because the guitars have really evolved this time round...more varieties of sounds and much much more keys...the chorus singing is rather weak too...but I'm starting to slightly like the guitars now...even though they're mainstream and repeat what's already been done...at least they're trying much harder...AAAH!!! TURNTABLE NOISES!!! Silly Mr. Gasmask man...another guitar solo...which is nice to the mainstream ear I assume...just wish Corey would do something interesting...he sounds like he's in Stone Sour...
Psychosocial 8/10: Starts with a somewhat interesting guitar intro with a lot of whiney and lifeless high notes until they revert to a 3 note riff (oooh scary)...Corey's voice is as monotoned as it always was...but I'll admit his singing in the chorus isn't awful at all...but then they return to the verse and Corey goes on again "I'm monotoneous you should listen to me because I ate your cat MWAHAHAHAA!!!" No Corey...just...no...what follows is another guitar solo that follows the main rules of the previous solos...however...when it modulates to the key of the chorus the melody comes off quite powerfully...however one of the guitarists has the tendency to play as many notes as quickly as he could very boringly (word check)...this is pretty much what this song consists of...
Dead Memories 8/10: Starts with what sounds like an awkwardly familiar guitar riff...which I shall try and remember in due course...but I can honestly say I've heard it before...Corey's singing is a bit of a change after all the random shouting...but with this familiar riff I am reminded of...Stone Sour...the solo particularly...I didn't expect something so much like Stone Sour on this album and it's awkward to listen to...on the plus side the guitars try and stand out and the drums still manage some very nice double bass...but...Stone Sour? Ugh...and the solo is ok...I just wish they'd either be slightly more technical or slightly more melodic...they seem to be in the middle of both in ratings of performance and they should focus more on one or the other...like the solo in pulse of maggots that was randomly attempting to be technical...
Vendetta 7/10: Starts with an alternate picked riff (sound familiar?) the drums trying their all so hardest...keep going Joey...hmm...Corey seems to have attained a new singing style for this song...good? Well it's kind of country-like...so it depends if you really like that kind of singing or not...personally I feel that he's ripped off certain people by singing like that...not to say you can never sing like that without ripping people off...but the melody and the "heys" are frightfully similar...no guitar solo either...
Butcher's Hook 7/10: A very light hearted guitar riff with Corey guess what? Shouting monotoneously yet again...about nothing in particular...the guitars are trying this time...ow...the chorus is really really cheesy sounding...I can't correlate this song to any of their previous songs...I was hoping for a change but this song seems to go in the wrong direction...I'm pretty sure Slipknot fans don't want Stone Sour...and the guitar solo? Ok if a tad attempting to be noodly and failing as it just remains on the dominant notes of the key...

Gehenna 8/10: Starts off in a sinister(ish) riff...as they begin to layer this riff...Corey enters in a talky voice...trying to sound weird and depressed again...I'm just so used to hearing people being much more depressed I can't accept him...but it's still a very pleasant sound...there's also a contrast with a very quick section of random shouting...afterwards he sings "I can finally be myself" and his singing begins...surprisingly switching key when you don't expect it which is a very nice surprise and keeps the listener feeling awkwardly happy...the guitar solo is alot more melodic than usual so I give Mick and Jim a happiness point for that...good work...
The Cold Black 8/10: Starts with a fast hasty guitar riff combined with an awkward synthesised guitar that briefly reminded me of Dream Theater but that quickly disappeared when I realised Corey was sitting on the sofa doing his shouty shouty voice...the drumms are still trying hard to stand out and succeeding very well...seeing as focusing on any of the other instruments at this point requires ten seconds of concentration...do you think Slipknot could play at Pianissimo? That would be interesting...a somewhat technical guitar solo...which is quite impressive this time so the song gets another point...HURRAH!! I haven't given a slipknot song under six out of ten...it's because I'm a pushover...
Wherein Lies Continue 8/10: Fast untoned guitar riffs...Corey's shout is slightly more interesting...maybe just because of the religious undertones...Corey's singing is pretty good...but now I can't stop comparing the singing to Stone Sour...well it's Corey's fault for being brainwashed by his first band...yes...I'm blaming Corey's singing by the band he was in...that's how stupid I am...
Snuff 7/10:...um...oh dear...an accoustic song that isn't interesting? I enjoyed Vermillion pt 2...in fact I gave that 10/10...for some reason...the guitars in this song are ok...Corey's singing is just too Stone Sourish for me...I guess I'm going to be attacked by Stone Sour for this...but I just dislike these really predictable voice tones...I know for a fact hardcore "I LOVE EXTREME SLIPKNOT" fans will hate this song...the phaser guitar riff has quite a good melody...

All Hope is Gone 9/10: Probably the most technical song on the album...the guitars do a very impressive song and the drums are also very very fast...Corey's voice is even quite bareable...the melody in the chorus is based around the guitars modulating key...which honestly I prefer over Corey's melodic singing in this album...a nice guitar solo fast and technical...overall a good closer...second best closer...for some reason Scissors can't be beaten...and it helped that it was a strong song on an album where most songs sounded the same...
...now as you can see I gave most songs a high score...so why only three stars? Because no song stood out for me 100%...there were no 10/10 songs and most of the songs followed the same formulas...
Overall:
Drums: Alot more double bass and still amazing to hear...
Guitars: Another great improvement...more guitar solos and varieties on riffs...
Bass:...kind of non-existent on this album...I completely forgot it existed...
Vocals: Really down hill...melodic singing sounds more like Stone Sour and the shouts are much more monotoneous...
...if you want to hear slipknot for what they're supposedly supposed to be then buy their previous albums as only four of the band memebers can be properly heard on this album...but if you want an album with mainstream vocals and mildly interesting guitar solos...then buy this album...
...well that concludes my exploration of Slipknot for a while...now I begin to delve in to Nine Inch Nails...

NOT! In fact this album is horribly disappointing... I just wanted to get your attention.
For a long time I was a hater and when Subliminal Verses came out, Duality.. that was sweet. I went back got the old albums. Honestly, I can say I was wrong about them to a point... however, I still find the entirety of any of their albums too chaotic to traverse. Not because their BRUTAL!!!11...OMFG??? Yeah, they're messy, sloppy, disjointed... not the musicianship, but the progression.. in song and from song to song.
And the problem persists, just worse. Waiting for this I heard Psychosocial, meh. Then I heard All Hope Is Gone, mmm.. Iowalicious. I was getting excited. Then I borrow it from my friend.... ZZZZZZZZ.....hmmmm...sorry... it.just..feels..so..*yawn*... long..Seriously, I was just wondering when it would be over; Gehenna was sweet but it's all down hill from there till the end when the poor ugly deformed bird makes one last attempt at flight and a brave effort it was indeed, metal in fact, incredibly so, but his past failings have cost him dearly and his boggled song progression, track arrangement, false promises, empty words (Dead Memories in my heart..GO F**K YOURSELF COREY!), and direction-less effort have doomed this ugly excretal creature to a plummeting death and... huh.. it's just easier to call it stupid.. seriously Corey, go f*-*k yerrrsel-ff.

Comment: Wow... Guitar Solos.. Singing..and Screaming. Not what I expected from a slipknot album. This stuff is way better musically than the old stuff, sorry hardcore fans, but this is much better music!

Comment: I've never listened to Slipknot before but after hearing Psychosocial on the radio I went out and bought the cd. I loved it! It's heavy, lyrics are good, bass is there...I haven't heard their previous stuff yet but I will definitely be exploring their older music now. If you're looking for a good head-banging album, this is it. I think the band is incredibly talented and the songs show their diversity. Lots of heavy bands don't really have true vocal capabilities so it was surprising to find out that Slipknot does. I would recommend this album - can't criticize their other stuff 'cause I haven't heard it yet so if anyone else out there is new to the band like me go for it.
