Summary: Worth the money - "fix" for Sony TV remotes
Comment: I've purchased a multitude of cheap space heaters for my finished basement over the years. Most have broken down for one reason or another within two years. I've had this Vornado for over two years now and it's has been excellent. A quick read of the features will point out how it differs from conventional space heaters. Because of how well it circulates air, I also use it as a regular fan during the summer.

Loses a star for one reason, the Sony TV remote problem. I just picked up a Sony flat-screen unknowing that lowering the volume on the TV's remote lowers the temperature control on the heater. A detailed web search after the fact confirmed the problem from multiple sources, but unveiled no solutions.

Not willing to accept defeat and guessing Vornado customer support would be of no help, I found a simple "try at your own risk" solution to this. The IR sensor lives behind the red light that is on the top-front of the heater's control panel. A small piece of electrical tape over that light blocks the remote's IR signal, at least from certain angles. Granted, this prevents use of the heater's remote, but I never used it to begin with.

You'll pay a premium for this unit, but it's well worth the money.

Summary: Finally foud the heater that warms up my family room!
Comment: My house has floor heating downstairs which is very expensive to run. We spend our time mainly in the family room but only have one Thermostat for the whole of downstairs. To save on energy costs this winter I decided to look for a space heater. Over the last 2 weeks I've tried 5 different heaters and was not satisfied with any of them until I brought home the Vornado 500!

The cons I would say are it's fairly expensive and has a couple of design faults with the display. The display light is very bright and you will probably need to cover the display if you plan to use it while sleeping. Also, the display is on the top of the heater. Having a remote is kind of pointless if you can't see what you're changing.

The pros are is it heats up the room well, has plenty of safety features, is very quiet, is not made of cheap material and is also backed by a 2 year warranty.

Every other heater I tried would trip the circuit breaker on high setting even if the only other things on were the TV and Satellite Box. The Vornado does not. I've tried switcing all the electrical items that use the same circuit on at the same time and it still doesn't trip it. I guess that's becasue the Vornado will reduce its heat level and fan speed once it get's close to your desired temperature. Whatever the reason it's great not to lose power in the middle of a movie and having to go into the freezing cold garage to reset the fuses.

I also tried this heater in one of the rooms in the house that just had the weatherstripping removed. It did not do a good job. Once I replaced the weatherstripping it heated up the whole room.

So in summary I highly recommend this heater as a solution for the lack of having zone heating. If your room has a draft fix that first and then this will totally be worth the money!

Summary: So far, so good.
Comment: I've only had this heater for just over a week, so I am not sure about it's long term reliability.

Pros:
It works, it was not broken or dead-on-arrival. That is something to celebrate with the portable electric heater industry nowadays.
When you turn the power on, it remembers your last setting.
The digital thermostat seems to be working accurately.
It has a remote control, which I am finding quite convenient, it is spoiling me.
The fan is fairly quiet, it is not as quiet as the Holmes Whisper Quiet models I used to own, but it is not obnoxious by any means. I would say I would like for it to be quieter, but I think most people would be pleased with it. I have excellent hearing, and I have been using it in my bedroom about 14 feet away from my bed, and I can hear it running for sure, but I am able to sleep with it. It is a pleasant enough white noise.
At first I couldn't have cared less, but now I actually am glad it is made of metal rather than plastic, and consequently has a 3-prong plug, I'm not worried about plastic models lighting on fire, but still, it is that much more piece of mind, and I'm guessing that it helps shield a little bit more EMF, for whatever that's worth.
The fan and heating coils are inside of an inner-tunnel/tube, so there is a layer of metal in between them and the electronics, not that this is a big deal, it probably doesn't really matter, but I like the idea nonetheless.
The housing does stay cool, although most/all models do nowadays.
There is a timer feature, to shut it off after 1 to 9 hours in 1 hour increments, I haven't used it myself.

Cons:
The beep sound is loud for my taste. It doesn't hurt your ears or anything, not loud like that, but I think it is audible from a nearby room. However, since the heater remembers your last setting when turning the power on, I find that I don't have to change any settings much and therefore don't make it beep much anyway.
There is a louder than average click noise when it cycles on and off. I am able to sleep through it, but I suppose some people might find it annoying. It is not super loud, but it is significantly louder than a typical analog wall thermostat. I hardly ever notice it anymore myself.
The price is higher than average for this industry, but, I think this heater is worth it because of the "Pros" I mentioned.
The backlighting for the digital display is bright and does not ever turn off (except when the power is turned off), however, I simply taped a piece of light-blocking paper over it and it doesn't bother me anymore, however when I want to see the display I have to bend over and lift up the paper covering, but I don't look at the display often so I don't really care. Also, I put some tape over the power on red light. Again, I use this in my bedroom so I don't like light when I am sleeping.
The fan speed is always the same, regardless of what mode it is in, fan only, low heat, or high heat, I think it would be nice to have a little slower fan speed in low heat mode, but I don't think it's too big of a deal since it isn't too loud anyway, and I primarily use it in high heat mode anyway.
It is made in China, I don't mind that it's made in another country, I just mind the poor working conditions the workers have to endure, what a crazy world we live in, such a shame.

Miscellaneous:
The built-in carry handle is a little shallow, but this is hardly a consideration in my opinion, it still works OK I guess, you can always carry it from the bottom.
It looks nice, although most/all other models do too.
The cord seems sturdy.
The Vornado DVTH model, however less expensive is not the same as this one, whenever the power is on, the fan never shuts off, even when the heat is off. In contrast to this one, TVH500, whereby the fan shuts off when the heat cycles off.
I had emailed Vornado customer service with a couple of questions prior to ordering, and they replied quickly with accurate answers.
My apartment has electric baseboard heat, and there is no insulation in the walls, and the walls are outside walls, so I think this heater will probably end up paying for itself in electric-bill savings because I imagine a good percentage of the electric baseboards' heat is conducting right through the wall to the outside, since they are mounted touching the wall of course. Maybe future builders will think to put a 1X6 or 2X6 backer board behind electric baseboard heaters, in between the heater and the wall, so as to prevent heat loss due to conducting through the wall, especially if it is an outside wall.
Previous heaters I have bought over the past couple of months, and were defective upon arrival: Sunpentown SPT SH-1508 Tower Ceramic Heater with Ionizer, and Q-Mark ("Fahrenheit") FBE15002 Portable Electric Baseboard Heater with Built-In Double Pole Thermostat (2 of these).
Previous heaters I bought In 2006: 2 or 3 Holmes Whisper Quiet Power Heater w/ 1Touch Controls, all of which were severely defective upon arrival (much to my dismay because I was replacing the exact same model which I had purchased years prior and was very happy with until excessive dust buildup finally shorted it out), a Lasko Tower Ceramic Heater which worked but I returned because I didn't like that on "auto" mode it only ran in high heat mode (and high fan) so it was too loud for my tastes, a Vornado DVTH which worked but I returned because I found out that the fan never shuts off even when the heat cycles off, a Vornado VH2 which I liked but it was severely defective, and a DeLonghi HHP1500 Mica Panel Radiator which I liked and used for 2 winters until it just broke for no apparent reason (it started sparking and I saw flashes of light).

Summary: Scary!
Comment: We have been using this heater for about 5 months now in our infant daughter's room. Up until last night, the product was fine. Last night we could smell a burning smell from outside of her room coming from the heater! The heater has never been moved and is always set to the same temperature so we are not sure what happened. Needless to say, this was extremely scary and we won't be using it anymore! All reviews I've read for the product are generally good so perhaps this is a fluke.

The LCD light on the top is also very bright and annoying - it never turns off.

Summary: Heats well and distributes it evenly
Comment: Pros:
- Works really well in heating up our living room quickly and quietly. (We tried the Holmes quartz tower heater (HQH307) but that only heated the air right in front of the machine and was super loud.)
- Housing stays cool.

Cons:
- I have small hands (about 6" long), but the indentation in the back where you are supposed to hold the top is even hard for me to insert my fingers into. Granted, you are also supposed to use your other hand to hold onto the other side at the base, but I would prefer a deeper top handle. I also encountered the same issue with the Holmes.
- The remote is small, symmetrical and not ergonomic. Just by feel, it's not easy to tell which end you're pointing at the heater.
- Each time you adjust the heater (manually or by remote), it makes a really loud beeping noise which scares our pets.

Update:
- I have to agree with the other reviewers that the blue LCD display is too bright. It emits a bright, large swathe of light. I didn't think this would be an issue, but the amount emitted is really impressive.
- Also, I set the timer to go off during the night and the beep was so loud that it woke me up. I really wish we could adjust the volume.
- The second time we turned it on, the heater started turning the timer setting on and off by itself as if a poltergeist had taken possession of it, all the while beeping repetitively. We unplugged the heater and plugged it back in. It did it again. After the 4th or 5th try, the heater finally settled down and we haven't had the problem again. I'm not sure what caused this.
- It still heats great.
