Summary: Brilliant design and performance!
Comment: I've owned different brands over the years and recently had my third Maxtor/Seagate fail beyond recovery. My choices narrowed down to Western Digital, LaCie and G-Tech. WD are great units but the My Book Studio edition has fewer connection ports and no power switch. G-Tech also makes great devices but cost more which made the LaCie an easy choice.
LaCie has a decent reputation among the creative community. The d2 is a great external HDD with 4 connectivity options, an all Aluminum enclosure (which is almost entirely a heat sink) and a three position power switch (on, off and auto). I use it with a couple of Macs and a neat feature of this device, which pops-up on the first mount, is an option to create a "swap partition" to allow Windows connectivity.
Connection speed is as expected. I use Firewire 800 and sSATA with excellent results. You can also daisy-chain multiple devices via dual Firewire 800 ports. The d2 is a very nice piece of industrial design and looks great on it's side or stacked with other d2 units.
I gave it 4 out of 5 stars since I haven't had it long enough to judge its long term reliability.

Comment: This product performs as advertised. It is easy to set-up and performs flawlessly when used as the default storage location for Apple's Time Machine. I've own LaCie drives in the past and I have no doubt that this one will provide years of solid service.If I could I'd give this item a sixth star.

Summary: La cie external HD
Comment: I purchased the La Cie because it met my need for a external HD at 500 GB.
I plugged it in and it immediately recognized my Macbook. It was simple to set
up and works great. I found that after a few days of use I could find documents or
photos, etc. that I need to locate I had been working on with great ease with the built in Time Machine that
comes with all the new Macs. For example, I Just open Pages or IPhoto and then open click
on the Time Machine icon on my dock and presto I am in Time Machine's program. Backups
are a breeze that I no longer have to worry about. I highly recommend La Cie 301825U d2
Quadra 500.

Summary: This is a great drive!
Comment: This is by far the best external HD I've had. I have absolutely no complaints. I love the fact that it has both Firewire 800 and 400 ports and comes with all the cables. I've had it hooked up to my intel iMac for about a month now, and it's been flawless. It's fast, quiet, and easy to set up and use. All I did was plug it in, install the included software to my computer, and format it. Done! I'm using the included Silverkeeper back-up software with no problems. It's great; it backs up only what's changed since the last backup, is fast, and gives you access to your files directly (unlike Retrospect). In short, I'm glad I purchased this drive.

Summary: Lacie D2 Quadra 500 gb
Comment: Excellent hard drive runs quite and smooth.Only complaint that I have is it won't hot swap to eSata output when plugged into computer.Firewire and Usb hook up work fine when hot swapped between computers.But computer won't recognize ESata unless you plug eSata port into desktop and then restart computer.I purchased the hard drive to use the eSata port because it is so fast compared to Firewire and Usb to move files between different computers.So it is real unhandy to have to restart computer every time you use the eSata output of hard drive on a different computer.If not for that I would give unit 5 stars.
