This contemporary, wiggle-dress-wearing trio merges the rich, layered harmonies and pristine pop of the classic Motown Records-era Girl Group sound with modern themes. We Are The Pipettes is a modern indie pop album, and a classic one at that. Having made a splash in the US with a sold-out club tour in June, a wave of early press from South By Southwest and beyond, and the EP/single release for Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me, The Pipettes are now poised to bring their timeless pop hooks and synchronized stage moves to the US with their debut LP, We Are the Pipettes.

Customer Rating: Summary: Fun Music! Comment: Sometimes you want fun rather than an intellectual exercise in music. When 50s music gave birth to the Beatles, it was the fun and the hooks that they were shooting for. All that slowly faded away up until the 80's when Blondie and the B52's came. These bands and others had recaptured the fun and were liked by John Lennon.
Any music collection without this disk would be sadly lacking in variety, I'm sure. It's essential. I wish there were more bands like this.
Customer Rating: Summary: Worthwhile -- on a Heavy Discount, That Is Comment: I heard "Pull Shapes" on the radio at the store where I work. The song grew on me, and afterwards I went to YouTube and listened to "Your Kisses are Wasted on Me." I adore the retro sound, the British accents, and the peppy beat. When I saw a heavily discounted copy of this CD available, I jumped for it.
Unfortunately, those are the only two songs I've found worthwhile. Most of the songs sound completely the same. One of them even sounds like they took the same basic melody of "Pull Shapes," inverted the notes and altered two or three tiny background rhythms, and put some different lyrics over the top of it ("I Love You"). Do they really think people are that stupid?
Another distasteful aspect is their apparent desire to be as shocking as possible, thereby separating themselves from the '50s and its squeaky clean moral agenda -- you know, it's hard not to associate them with that time period, what with the costumes and music style. I could handle a few off-color or distasteful elements; but it's not that simple.
They don't just state these differences; their lyrics are almost "exhibitionist" in nature. I really don't care if it's an "act" or not... it's not very funny to me to treat people in an abusive manner. It's as though they're actually proud of being completely inconsiderate of their partners. "Sex" and "One Night Stand" in particular are just disgusting... "One Night Stand" in more ways than I can count. Way to treat men like dirt...
I feel that this group has a lot of potential. I love their sound on 2 songs, and the rest are just uninspired trash, some of which trade quality for shock value. Not a good trade-in, I think.
You should probably just buy the songs separately on iTunes. This CD is not worth the purchase unless you buy it for $2 or less.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Pippetes Great Throwback Pop Band Comment: I had came across a wonderful video for a song by a relatively unknown British pop group a few months ago on Yahoo. After the song was over I had immeditately proceeded to google the band and find more about them. WhatI found out was the band was called the Pipettes and the song I had heard was It's Not Love But It's Still A Feeling. I went to their website to hear more of their stuff and was absolutely blown away by the sense of retro-style these three girls have in their music. Well that and the emotion present in the songs. This album may not be a musical masterpiece but for a pop album it is a great album. There is not a bad song in bunch. There are even quite a few suprises waiting for the uninitated to the experiece. I hope people find this album because it is just pure joy encoded on the bottom side of plastic.
Customer Rating: Summary: pretty good! Comment: Catchy tunes, fun beats... not all the songs are great, but it's a worthwhile album.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fuzzbox - The Next Generation Comment: Great album by a fun group. reminds me of (We've Got a) Fuzzbox (and We're Going to Use It) and I mean that in a complimentary way.
