Stronger than a TENS unit, with a wider pulse width to elicit muscle contraction for a period of time. More than just nerve stimulation, muscles are contracted and relaxed on and off to strengthen muscles, increase blood circulation to the area, and/or to reduce edema.

Customer Rating: Summary: Nice Little unit Comment: I use one for pain control. Works as a TENS more or less in the Continuous Mode.
I don't like the belt clip. If you somehow get it pushed up from the bottom it pops off the belt very easily, then it gives a good yank to your electrodes. I use tape to secure the main lines of electrodes.
Do NOT use this device as a EMS unless you know what you are doing. It is powerful enough to do muscle damage I assume.
Good ease of use and battery life.
I am peeved at the seller though. Never sent my batteries and charger, even after emailing them.
But if you want and EMS, this is the way to go.
Customer Rating: Summary: Ease of use Comment: This product works ok but is diferent than one I had previously owned. It is harder to work the controls than my other one. My older one used a control like a dial on a radio to control speed and strength. This worked a lot easier han the cumbersome controls on this item.
If you think this is going to substitute for regular workouts, toughen up your muscles without exercise, or help you reduce weight, forget it. It does however reduce and block pain from injury or desease. Chiropractor's use this irem for just that purpose, and it was designed for this purpose.
I was priviledged to see the origonal items being built for chiropractic sales in the early 70,s, and at that time these were by perscription only. I was glad to see later on that they were not just by perscription. I bought one then, and it worked fine for reducing pain. This is my third one.
Customer Rating: Summary: Amazing little powerhouse! Comment: This diminutive EMS (technically NOT a TENS unit) stim device is packed with incredible power (be VERY careful and conservative with output level dials turning) and awesome design for even one-handed parameter settings via logical and simple button layout. For those who know how to use EMS properly, this model delivers far beyond its cost and is best-in-class.
One 9v battery lasts and lasts, the all digital design eliminates old-tech power-robbing prior similar units.
Most important is to forget using the inferior pads included and only ever buy vastly superior "PALS Platinum" pads by Axelgaard. Their white foam pads work best for adhering to flat skin areas and their knit steel Multistick best for bending around contact areas. Easily found online.
The best quality stim pads makes all the difference for both comfort (peeling away pads really sting unpleasantly) and durability. With careful use, PALS lasts for dozens of applications. Cheaper pads barely last one session before slipping away from skin, THE cause of discomfort.
While only $55 and pack-of-cards size, this EMS unit MUST be used with care and never reckless Jackass-style play. It easily could cause muscle damage with its output power.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good price, but you get what you pay for Comment: I'm guessing their 1000 model is a better bet. With the 550, you need to amp up to full power for stimulation of areas where your muscles are hidden by fat or you skin is thicker--like back, stomach and legs.
The item is not as pictured--no digital screen and the electrode pads are circular and not as sticky as those pictured (search: Medical Product Online for some better ones at a good price. Plus you'll need extra electrodes any way).
All this aside, this has been a good tool to help me heal faster from surgery and relax my neck and lower back muscles.
