Even though the ONE, 3rd Edition is TomTom's entry-level portable GPS vehicle navigation device, it remains a complete solution with an incredible range of features.

Tiny, but Tough
A sleek design and a sharp display combine to make the TomTom ONE a vital companion on the road. THe ONE, 3rd edition comes pre-loaded with complete maps for the United States and Canada.

Weighing less than 10 ounces and measuring 4.33 x 3.5 x 1.34 inches, the TomTom ONE can be easily installed in any vehicle. An included windshield suction mount holds it in place. Plus, with an operating temperature range of an icy -10 degrees to a sweltering 55 degrees Celsius (14 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit), the navigator is durable enough for New England winters or Arizona summers. The TomTom ONE is powered by an internal lithium ion battery that can be charged from your vehicle's cigarette lighter with the included 12-24V adapter.

Easy To Use
The user-friendly design also puts it a step above other navigation systems. The crystal-clear multicolor display makes for exceptionally easy viewing of maps, routes, driving directions, and other traveling information, such as mileage and distance. Measuring 3.5 inches, the TFT display offers a resolution of 320 x 240 to provide brilliant two- and three-dimensional graphics. The device also features 32 MB RAM and 380 MHz CPU, making it responsive and zippy. Using the USB port and the provided cable, you can use your PC to add your own points of interest.

With its touch-sensitive screen, the TomTom ONE puts programming and operation literally at your fingertips to make sophisticated technology simple. The built-in database offers millions of points of interest for you to use as destinations or reference points as you plan your trip. ONE will also provide a selection of available routes, giving you the option of avoiding toll roads or choosing between the quickest or the most scenic routes. The database includes zip codes to simplify your route selection, and for extra convenience, the TomTom ONE lets you save the addresses of frequent destinations, making route planning easier and faster than ever. Other display features include a compass mode to assist you with directional orientation, and an anti-glare screen for optimal viewing even in direct sunlight.

You Can Hear Me Now
ONE provides clear and accurate turn-by-turn voice instructions, so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road while your vehicle is on the move. Voice instructions are available in over 30 languages. Tom Tom even has comedy and celebrity voices available, some for free, and others for purchase via download at TomTom's website. One nifty feature is speed-sensitive volume. With this optional feature turned on, your vehicle's engine becomes louder or quieter as your speed changes, the volume adjusts itself accordingly, guaranteeing clear and easy listening.

Customer Rating: Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5
Summary: not really worth the money
Comment: If you plan to use TomTom's `Home' software to connect your GPS to your computer, MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR GPS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE!! Then immediately make a copy of that backup. Each time you back up your unit onto your computer it erases the previous backup.
TomTom's Home program has a tendency to screw up your unit when installing updates. TomTom does not have a working fix for this. According to TomTom customer support (the reply came two weeks after opening a support ticket on their website), your GPS unit and maps contained on it are NO LONGER covered by warranty if their Home software or their updates cause a problem with your GPS. When installing a software update to the unit I purchased, the maps were erased from my unit. The fixes provided my TomTom customer support were to either spend $70 for new maps, or send the unit back to be repaired, for an amount they will not specify. Their update, installed using their software, onto their unit, and you're out of luck when it doesn't work correctly and makes your unit worthless, unless you want to give them more money to fix the problem that's their fault-that's just plain wrong. Amazon was very good about exchanging my unit for one that now works, even after installing the same updates that ruined the first one (I made backups before doing anything with the new one). I hope the one I got was a dud, but TomTom's level of support makes me think this is a common occurrence and a problem with their units/software that they do not want to deal with.
The maps that come on the unit are not very up to date; many points of interest are missing-for places that have been in their current locations for 5+ years. The GPS antenna and reception on this unit are VERY good; it will see your current location very quickly after power on. One BIG advantage over other/older TomTom units, the maps and unit software are stored inside the unit. Other TomTom units use a removable SD card, that if you lose it or it's stolen, the GPS will not work at all.
Overall the hardware seems to be good, the GPS software, PC software are lacking in accuracy and proper functionality, and the Customer/Tech Support are severely lacking in quality, quantity, and timeliness. If you plan to use a unit as-is out of the box, and never updating it, this is the unit for you. If you want something you will be able to easily add and upgrade to, you may want to keep looking. Gamin or Magellan for example, have been in the North American GPS market for a long time and are `getting it right'; while TomTom is making a good effort, they just are not there yet. Refusing to fully stand behind your own product is a BIG step in the WRONG direction.
The unit's antenna/reception and internal storage are the only things that make it worth a two star rating.

    Summary: which way?
Comment: I'm really pleased with the TomTom, especially when a turn is missed and can't turn around it will figure an alternative route. However, it also told us the fastest route included a turn down a seasonal road. We were towing a large trailer and didn't take the turn. I've had google and mapquest also send us down dirt roads with grass growing in the middle!!!

    Summary: TomTom One Three
Comment: This products performs well in all conditions. The only thing that could be improved is the volume level.

Comment: Easy to handle and comfortable. It surely worthy of the money I paid for it. I will recommend this product to my friends.

Summary: OK for low end unit but lacking...
Comment: Don't get me wrong, this is a good LOW-END unit however it does lack one or two things that I see as basic.

Firstly, once this thing gets you someplace why is it that it doesn't have a simple "reverse/find your way back" button? If you are staying at a hotel or a friend's and doing sightseeing from there you'd have to install a favourite for that location. Not a horrible process but...

Second, I go to Canada a lot. I can tell it to show Kilometers on the screen but the voice still tells the distances to turns in miles or...

...YARDS!!! My odometer is in tenths or miles... why would the next turn voice tell me yards. I don't play football... I don't know how many yards is what!!!

Also... after I updated the map is was still a little behind. There is a street block in my city that was changed from one-way to two-way about three years ago. The updated map that I downloaded still shows it as one way... THREE YEARS!

The last trip I made to Canada needed a couple updates in the map as well. In fact I suspect from that trip that they don't do too much to keep the Canadian map updated. :-P

Again, having poo-pooed this thing I need to reiterate that as a low-end unit it is pretty good. I like the fact that it doesn't freak out if I drive past a turn because I want to see the sights. As long as there were alternative turns ahead it simply re-routes. If the new route ahead is longer or more complex it simply suggests that you turn around and take the missed turn.
