Summary: I Like It a Lot!
Comment: I wanted to print on CD's so I started with the Epson R260 and loved it. It uses the 6 cartridge Claria ink. The unit cost me about $60 but ink replacement costs $110. When I ran out of ink, instead of buying replacement ink I bought the R380 unit which had new ink cartridges inside. That unit cost $79. (It seems that the ink cartridges that come with the new units have the same amount of ink as replacements.) I saved $30 and got a better unit.

When the R380 ran out of ink I bought the RX580, on sale for $79. Lots of features and it was cheaper than buying replacement ink alone. When the RX580 ran out of ink I bought the RX680 on sale for $119. This unit does everything and has a duplexer. Epson.com has the RX680 on sale right now at $79. So if you need 6 cartridges of Claria ink, buy the RX680.

I haven't had any problems with any of my units. I bought them all from Frys Electronics (Frys.com) For the price, the quality of the color photo printing I do is great! The CD's come out extremely professional looking and the scanner is fine, I rarely use it however. I've never used the internal photo processing features, I do all my work in photoshop. But the unit is full of photo features.

The down side to this unit is most of all the cost of the ink. So, you may want to shop around to beat $100. Also, I have not been completely happy that the colors in the printed photo,(although very good), match the colors as I see them on my monitor. My monitor is color managed weekly with ColorMunki (a $500 color management device) but when I color manage the Epson Printer with ColorMunki I don't get the near perfect match of colors that I would expect. It could be that I am needing to learn more about the color profile settings the Epson can work with.

It's an attractive unit. Yes it shakes a little, yes it's REALLY big, and it takes a lot of trial and error to learn all the features and settings it has(it does almost anything you would imagine). But that's why it can put out such a satisfying color print. I've never seen anything on the market that does so much so well for the price.

Summary: Not working out of the box
Comment: I bought this printer because of the great reviews. It came and I started setting it up. When I put the ink cartridges in it gave a error message"Cannot recognize ink cartridges". I tried re-installing them several times with no success. I called the Epson tech line. They didn't try to trouble shoot it they just said it was a hardware failure and they would send me a new one in 5-7 days. They told me I could keep the first one and dispose of it. This doesn't give me a good feeling about Epson's printers. Hope the replacement works!!

Summary: I love this printer
Comment: This is our fourth (technically fifth) Epson printer, and I just love it. We got it for such a great price that we replaced our last Epson all-in-one PhotoStylus RX600 even though it wasn't that old.

I'm a graphic designer, so I'm very picky about output quality. We use this printer at home, and the photos we print are so spectacular that I haven't looked at other brands of color printers for years. I love the borderless printing and am excited to design things with full bleeds now.

The scanner is also top notch. This just floors me because it's better than the scanners I used to buy for $5K not much more than a decade ago.

The display screen on this model is better than our last Epson and I find it easy to use even though I'm not that technologically oriented. My husband showed me how to charge my iPod using the little connector thing on the side, and I get such a kick out of that! It's very convenient to have a copier on my desk too, even though it doesn't have a page feeder. It's best for small jobs.

This printer also prints directly onto CDs. Maybe we'll try that feature someday. We're still using magic marker, which offends my designer sensibilities!

A sidenote: Our first RX680 didn't work properly -- the black text wasn't crisp. I worked with Epson's technical service guys for a day and then they determined that the problem was unfixable. They sent me a replacement printer and prepaid return label immediately. I think I had them within two days. I was very impressed with their customer service.

Summary: new printer produced error due to faulty microchips
Comment: It's ridiculous for an Epson printer not to recognize its own ink cartridges (i.e. to be more exact, the microchip on each Epson cartridge). 2 of the 6 ink cartridges that came with the RX680 printer could not be recognized. "Error: Ink cartridges cannot be recognized." Multiple attempts of re-seating the cartridges, dry-wiping the metal contacts (both on the cartridges and on the printer), shaking the cartridges, and power-cycling the printer still did not make the error go away. It makes me think twice on paying in excess of $100 for a set of Epson microchipped ink cartridges that could be faulty. It's ironic that the "premium" (i.e.my money) that goes to the Epson microchips brought about this very unsatisfying user experience.

Summary: Great purchase!
Comment: This printer has multi-function. It's a regular color/bw printer, as well as a scanner. And it prints beautifully directly onto a CD, which is what I was looking for. Good, quality machine. And it has a great black, sleek look - looks great in my office. I am VERY pleased with this purchase and highly recommend it!!
