Customer Rating: Summary: Finally available on DVD Comment: Maybe its because I grew up in the 80's when, for the most part, all we had was VHS, because I don't understand what all the fuss is about. I rented this movie at my local scarecrow video on VHS and I cant tell the difference between the VHS and the DVD except for the DVD has the extra scenes and special features. In other words, I am very happy that I bought this DVD because now I OWN the movie...no...it wasn't digitally re-mastered but like I said..its just as good (actually better) than the VHS I rented. So the people who are complaining must have been expecting high def or something? If youv'e been waiting patiently for a watchable version of this movie to release on DVD this one is great.
Customer Rating: Summary: Decent transfer Comment: I bought this DVD release of Kenneth Russell's "The Devils" before reading the other reviews on this page. You would have thought that the quality of this DVD was so bad that you might as well have watched a snowstorm. I'm very glad that I bought it. This is an unreleased movie. This means you are not going to get a transfer on the level of a professionally restored version. People who can't figure this out shouldn't order rare films and stick to Batman and The Mummy. I thought the transfer was great. It was not grainy at all, like a decent VHS. This DVD is absolutely worth purchasing until a fully restored version is released, which might not ever happen. I would buy it now while the price is still low!
Customer Rating: Summary: the devils Comment: Anyone who saw the original will never forget the scene concerning Redgrave and the grate in the ground. Truly in bad taste, but it is missing from this release so how can this be advertised as "uncut"?
Customer Rating: Summary: The worst dvd encode ever Comment: This brilliant movie deserves a real release. Not this bootlegger's scam.
The problem is not with the movie's print, as some other reviewers have implied. This "Restored" video has either been transferred from a low-resolution videotape or compressed at an absurdly low bitrate. All the pixellation, bad color and blurry focus are the kind you might get from a third-generation VHS tape transfer, mashed to hell with some free consumer dvd software. Practically unwatchable, and nothing at all to do with the original film source.
The extras are interesting, but they look like crap, in keeping with the design and authoring of everything else. The documentary and pieces of chopped-up interviews were actually recorded off of TV (!) - you'll hear an announcer's voice over the end credits saying "Now, watch the film... next on Channel Four!" What a joke.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Devils Masterpiece! Comment: Finally. The unedited version-widescreen-with docs of Ken Russell's finest film. This euro-bootleg edition is somewhat grainy....but who cares! Ken Russell fans have waited for this film for so long we would take any copy. Be happy this edition is available (with the deleted rape of christ scene in the features) for viewing at all. Maybe one day the bull**** over this film will go away and Warner Bros will release a cleaned up version..but for now thank your stars and take what you can get. This film is the one of the best films ever made. Highly controversial, beautifully designed, and directed by one of the most underrated directors of our time. Relish in the story..forget the picture quality...and enjoy. People nowadays are spoiled with DVD. They complain about senseless things.Remember when it was just VHS? It's the story people..not the number of pixels.
Ken..we will always be thankful for this film. Truly one of the most beautiful films ever made.
