A 3-way fluorescent tube sticks out over the top of the frosted plastic bowl by 3 or 4 inches. Customer Rating: Summary: a disappointing 3-way Comment: I bought two of these three-way floor lamps for office. The price was right and it was exactly what I was looking for. After assembling both lamps, I discovered that they were pretty flimsy. For starters, the shade is made from a soft plastic. I often worry that the heat from the bulbs will somehow burn a hole through it. Also, one lamp socket is faulty. It does not advance to the next highest wattage (and yes, a 3-way bulb was used). For the price, these lamps are average. They do what they were built to do. If you want something more durable and reliable, spend a little extra. I give this lamp 3 out of 5 stars. Just because it's inexpensive doesn't mean it has to be so poorly done... The only thing which is not convenient for me is I have to buy the 3 way bulb not the normal one for it.
