Customer Rating: Summary: Piece of junk! Comment: I purchased this piece of junk thinking it would be the solution to transferring my VHS tapes to disc. Was I ever taken in! Tech support was helpful and responsive. My computer met all the requirements for the VivBox, but after numerous attempts to secure a decent transfer it did not work well. Audio and sound were out of sync. Several inquiries to the tech support suggested that I try this-and-that, all with no success. At last one tech told me to try the gadget on several different computers which I did---still no success. After several days I received an e-mail from tech support admitting defeat. The note stated that their techs duplicated my problems but could not solve them. I was told to write for a refund and enclose a copy of my bill of sale AND keep the gadget in the event that someone else may find it helpful. This was the first time that a company ever made this offer to me. I complied and am still waiting for a refund after six months. In all, I guess it does not matter whether or not I receive a refund. I will never deal with nor encourage anyone else to use a product made by this company.
Customer Rating: Summary: Easy to use, but slow Comment: Produces very good quality DVD's and it is very easy to use. My only complaint is that it takes up to 3 hiours to transfer a 2 hour VHS tape. I just set it and forget it but my kids complain that I'm hogging the computer. I've been trying to transfer 4 or 5 per weekend. We have 20 years worth of tapes to get through and with five kids, thats a lot of tapes. It also offers limited editing features. I'd recommend this product for anyone wanting to preserve their personal memories sitting on VHS.
Customer Rating: Summary: Pretty cool Comment: I have never used a transfer software before, but this was pretty simple to use. I have already transfered 2 movies to DVD and it is just like owning the real thing. I also like the audio transfer feture. I would recomend this product
Customer Rating: Summary: Avoid, Unless Hardware Is Perfect Comment: A few months ago, I was searching for a product to convert my VHS tapes to DVD format, as I am moving in the coming months and wanted to "downsize" a bit. The first product I chose was this one, and I was severely disappointed for a couple of reasons:
First, any product of this nature involves a bit of an investment. One must buy DVD's and cases, as well as an audio/video cord (and probably an extra long one, if you don't have an extra VCR laying around, as it needs to be pretty near your computer).
Now, that investment wouldn't be so bad if the finished product was satisfactory, but sadly that probably will not be the case. From my own experience (with a new Gateway computer), I found that the newly-created DVD turned out to be less quality than the original tape unless taped on the highest quality mode, with which you only get one hour of dub time (or, essentially useless). Basically, the very best one can expect from this product is a reproduction of the original VHS tape.
I did, however, give this product two stars based on the fact that, with a large hard drive and top-of-the-line video capture card, it may work quite well (and thus would be much less expensive than a VCR/DVD recorder combo unit). Yet, if I have a new computer and wasn't satisfied with the results, it would take a mammoth effort (too much for the hassle) to make this product acceptable.
Thus, if you have a super-powered computer geared for playing videos, this product may be a fit for you. If not, though, I would suggest buying a combo unit (or at least waiting until they come down in price!)
Customer Rating: Summary: Hardware OK, Software sucks Comment: The hardware works ok, but the software is lacking, the documentation not helpful and the support is non-existent.
