Customer Rating: Summary: Disappointed Consumer Comment: The electronic owl that I purchased initially fulfilled the mission for which I purchased it--getting rid of the crows that frequented my yard. However, the owl lost its sound after one month's time. The sound device stopped working completely, and it is not nearly as effective in scaring away predators as it was when the sound was available. Since the owl has a sixty-day warranty, I am hoping the company will replace it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Loud but effective Comment: Squirrels and rabbits kept digging up my flowers by the roots ever night. I read the review decided to take a chance on this owl instead of a silent statue. It is loud and "hoots" at every movement and sound but it does work. I have to move it every couple of days to fool the live critters but that is no big deal as I walk by the garden every day. The "hoots" can be annoying but no more than the pigeons cooing or the crows cawing. The hooting can be turned off and allowing only the head turning. Wish it had light up eyes...that would really set off the pests!
Customer Rating: Summary: Squirrel deterrent Comment: Squirrels have been gnawing the paint off our porch furniture. We purchased 1 of these owls to put on the deck, near the furniture. It seemed to work, but the range was too short (we have a large deck), so we had to order another one. I haven't seen a squirrel on our deck since putting the owls out there, so the product appears to work. However, it's annoying to remember to turn the owls off and bring them inside every time it rains. Also, I think they should have a longer range. On the plus side, the hooting sounds rather authentic (our neighbor thought he was hearing real owls), and the owls run on AA batteries.
Alternate use for this product: Place near front door to surprise Halloween trick-or-treaters. :)
Customer Rating: Summary: Skip this product Comment: The motion sensors are cheap and too sensitive. Most sensors are set off by heat + motion. These just go off with a slight breeze. So it was constantly turning on, I had to silence the sound because it was getting annoying.
Batteries drain quickly. It only uses 3 AA batteries.
It is very light and unstable and won't stand up on it's own. Blows over with the slightest breeze. They should have made it to hold D batteries. That would have weighted down the base and you wouldn't have too change batteries so often.
You are supposed to mount it to something with screws. I should have done that, but then you can't get to the battery compartment without unscrewing it from the base. And you have to change batteries often.
After having my owl for 2 weeks, it was blown off a 2' ledge onto the lawn and broke the switch and is now inoperable.
I am going to re-wire it to run on a plug-in transformer. Then it can swivel it's little exorcist head around all day long if it wants! And it will! I still won't be able to use the sound mode. The hooting all day long is annoying, and the neighbors were wondering what the noise was.
Customer Rating: Summary: Garden owl Comment: Although it looks imposing to a human, this particular owl has no effect on keeping squirrels or other pests out of our garden. Also, the batteries don't last long when it is on the sensor mode.
