Customer Rating: Summary: verilux natural alarm clock lamp review Comment: This is a great alarm clock for anyone who hates getting up in the dark to go to work. The alarm can be set to sound or light or both. It will slowly keep brightening the light over the course of 5 or 15 minutes and wake you just as natural sunlight does. I did find that setting it for 15 minutes woke me before the set alarm time so 5 minutes was better. There is a definite difference in the type of light it emits. As funny as it sounds the light feels different than flourescent or halogen. I've noticed I'm more alert, energetic and less grumpy about getting up regardless of how much sleep I've gotten. The price at Amazon was the best, I've seen it for $199 elsewhere.
Customer Rating: Summary: Love it, would buy it again Comment: I recently bought the Verilux Rise and Shine to help me transition into waking up about two hours earlier than I used to. The lamp is brilliant - although I get less sleep than before, I feel bright and awake in the mornings. The sounds are repetitive (and some are kind of annoying), but I've found that I do not wake up with the light alone. I think the harbor sounds are all right for the mornings, and I really love the rain and ocean for going to sleep at night (the lamp's sleep timer is great!)
Customer Rating: Summary: I could never get up in the winter! Comment: I love this product. Ever since I could remeber, getting up in the winter was torture and I was always tired throughout the day (basically waking up before I'm ready does not work for me)and caffiene just makes me hyper in a bad way. A few years ago a purchased a cheaper lamp- it had natural sounds and scented beads. The light was not natural or bright and it broke in less than a year. When I bought the verilux lamp I felt I was taking a chance because of my bad experience, but I have been very happy with it. I wake-up better and feel more awake all day- especially in the winter months (Pittsburgh is dark). I have been using it for almost 2 years now and I am changing the bulb for the first time (because my kids knocked it over). My only complaints are that the display is bright (I cover it with a small book- like all of the other electronic lights in my room) and I don't like the fact that it "remembers" the point at which you turned it off the day before and repeats that level of light for the next day. One day I wake up easily and the next day I need more light. So if I wake up early, I just reset it. Basically, it is one of those features that someone felt good about inventing, but I think it is counterproductive. I have not tried it to help me fall asleep, so I cannot comment on that. Also- when we gom on vacations across time zones, it works really well to get us and the kids back on schedule more easily.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good idea, poor execution - Save your money Comment: I loved the idea of this product. The thought of gently waking to gradually increasing light or sound was very appealing. Unfortunately it doesn't quite work out as planned. Here are my issues:
* The light comes on very abruptly, not gradually. Yes, it does increase in brightness, but the initial "on" is very bright...enough to wake me immediately rather than gradually.
* The lamp itself is noisy. When the light comes on, it has a very noticeable buzzing noise that contributes to waking me immediately, instead of gradually.
* The display is VERY bright, even when turned down to the low setting. It's literally bright enough to cast shadows throughout the bedroom. There's no way to turn it off. I had to tape a piece of dark plastic over the front of the lamp to dim it enough that it wouldn't keep the room unnaturally bright at night.
In short, I have not received any of the supposed benefits of gradually waking. This, in practice, is no different than any other alarm clock.
Customer Rating: Summary: Makes all the difference Comment: I've had two sunrise-type alarms before this one and this is the best of the three. The adjustable time to wake/sleep, on-board radio, and natural sounds were selling points. I especially like the sleep setting. As a person who wakes up in the dark at least five days out of seven, this is a life saver.
One negative: previous sunrise lamps had a sound alarm that played at the end of the light fade-in. This lamp would have been a five-star with that feature. Thankfully, my PDA functions nicely in that capacity.
