Editorial Reviews:

Yakgrips are great new paddling accessory. These simple, light weight additions to your favorite paddle will greatly improve your paddling experience. They are available for take apart and solid shaft paddles. These simple but ingenious devices are easy to install or remove. Some paddlers will deny they need them until the day they try them! Other paddlers know on sight that this is the accessory that they must have. Either way you can't go wrong with Yakgrips.

Summary: What a relief!
Comment: I'm relatively new to kayaking and I was getting blisters which made paddling very painful. I was starting to develop calluses and thought I would have to resort to wearing gloves. I'm glad I found these Yakgrips instead. They were a terrific solution. They provided just the right amount of cushioning. I have small hands and they didn't increase the size of the grip too much for me.

They were, however, very difficult to get onto the paddles, but once in place they stayed where I put them.

Summary: Yak grips
Comment: Yak grips for Kayak paddles work great. The provide a non slip surface while paddling and prevent blisters. They install much easier with two persons, one to pour a little water between the grip and the paddle while the second slides it into position!

Summary: some flaws
Comment: These do provide better gripping than just a smooth kayak shaft, but they have two drawbacks. First, these are thick and they make the gripping area a lot wider across than I prefer. Secondly, they move around with use - paddling some rough white water I was constantly re-adjusting them, as they kept sliding up and down the shaft. They are very hard to move when trying to re-adjust them, so it must be the combination of getting splashed while having force applied which makes them slide around.

Summary: No more calluses
Comment: Kayaking for hours at a time left calluses on my hands which caused a slightly different grip on the paddle. After being advised not to wear gloves and changing my grip, the callus production was reduced. As I increased my lap durations, I noticed the calluses coming back. I decided to try the Yakgrips and was surprised how the grip change was not bothersome. They took some time to put on. Lubrication with water is key to easing their application on the paddles. During use, the grips would move slightly over time if water reached the part of the paddle where applied. This required a brief break to budge them back. I also noted, that the grips tend to retain water when wet. The water retention caused my hands to soften and gave me "raisin fingers". I would reduce this effect by wringing out the grip by squeegeeing by gripping it between my thumb and forefinger down the length of the grip. I would dry my hands on my shirt afterwards. Normal sweat did not cause this problem. Soaking of the grips occurred while going on edge with the boat and submerging the grips.

Summary: Great product.
Comment: You wet the inside of the grip and the paddle shaft with water and have to work them into position. Worth the effort because they stay nicely in place. They provide a positive grip wet or dry, allowing you relax your fingers with confidence and thus reduce fatigue.
