As one of the first plug-in handsets designed exclusively for Skype, the IPEVO FREE.1 has earned a reputation for its seamless integration with the world's most popular VoIP software in an easy-to-use device. The functions and buttons on the FREE.1 are tailor-made for the Skype experience, which takes a lot of the guesswork out of placing calls via a computer. A "s" key activates the Skype window on your desktop, a toggle "buddy jog" to let you effortlessly scroll through your contact list. Or simply press the "+" key to initiate a SkypeOut call, and use the number pad to dial out just like a regular telephone.Engineered and optimized for Skype, FREE.1 delivers exceptionally clear call quality with 16K sampling rate for Skype-to-Skype calls, and 8K sampling rate for calls to landlines. The unique "hollow" mouthpiece design minimizes the annoying "echo" effect.

Customer Rating: Summary: Works well but... Comment: The phone itself works very well and overall I am pleased with my purchase, but, I had to download the IPEVO control centre myself from elsewhere because the CD which was sent did not have everything. That was quite annoying. However, once I got it working, there was no turning back
Customer Rating: Summary: Good hardware, falls short with software for Mac. Comment: First off, I can't really comment on this device if your going to be using it with windows, only Mac.
I bought this based on other reviewers as well as the fact that it was the only USB skype phone I could find that had drivers for OSX.
The good things about this phone are the following :
- Excellent sound quality. I can't say anything negative on this front.
- VERY light
- compact size.
- long cord (though I wish like the philips phone I had before this that it provided a groove around the outer edge of the phone to wind the cord around the phone).
The OSX "driver" is another issue. Overall when you boot up it works fine, my problem is that since I'm using it with a laptop, my laptop invariably goes to sleep or I will shut the lid and go grab lunch etc. When I return and start using my computer, if I try and use the phone, it's totally disconnected from Skype. I have to unload skype, unload the driver, then reload to get it working again. For casual use, I could recommend this phone. If like another person said in their reviews if you just want a phone to call home with or make an occasional call, again I would recommend. If your like me however and wanted to use this as a phone to use throughout the day and rely on it to make and receive calls, you might think again. I have had numerous occasions where I've answered and I get nothing. People get a bit impatient when you have to always call them back and explain away your phone problems.
Overall I think the "driver" overshot here. First I originally had a philips phone that had NO OSX drivers. It worked great as a handset, but the buttons didn't work. So this driver only needed to handle the ability to use the keypad on it. The mic/speaker should have been left to the OS (which I'm sure would ordinarily work without any drivers. If they'd done that at least I wouldn't be answering calls and either not hearing the other party or the other party not hearing me. Instead they appear to have tried to write drivers for the mic/speaker which means they seem to think they know better than apple... probably the reason it's having issues.
I would also add if your buying this for a desktop system that will mostly be on (you can't close the lid on a desktop ;) ) this would probably work better for you than for me on a laptop.
So, overall a mixed review. I like this phone, but it's dependability for moderate to heavy use just isn't there.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great phone for Skype Comment: The sound quality is good, better than my analog headphone / mike combo. Being a USB connected device it bypasses the sound card thus not picking up noise from the computer. As a hand held phone format it is pretty good. Too thin to hold between your head and shoulder like a real phone. So, if you are on a longer call it can get tiring having to hold this phone. Having one hand tied up when your in front of the computer can be a handicap too. Otherwise I like it. One thing... Even though Skype recognized that I had this device and asked if it was allowed to interact with Skype, I still had to go into skypes settings and enable / allow it again before the buttons etc worked.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great phone for travel Comment: This is my second Ipevo Free-one USB phone. I liked the first one so much that I gave it to a friend from Europe. It is great for travel and fits easily in my laptap bag. Since I use it with my laptop I don't need a screen on it--the computer is the screen. I need Internet access when I travel internationally so with Ipevo I can call home for two cents a minute from my hotel room and not have to pay a hotel phone call rate.
Customer Rating: Summary: Best USB Skype phone, Period. Comment: I have been a huge fan of Skype. I dropped my landline service long time ago and use Skype as my dedicated home phone service ever since. I am using SkypeIn, SkypeOut and a monthly subscription (unlimited USA and Canada) now and extremely happy with the service from Skype. Skype is the most reasonable service to call foreign countries and I do make international calls a lot. Since I have been a long time user of Skype, I have used many Skype phone solutions on the market. I have tried USB phones, USB phone adapters that can allow me to use normal phones, and computers. The USB phone adapters were my preferred solution before it gets broken. I had used an ActionTec Vosky Call Center and a Eforcity USB Skype phone adapter. Both of them stop working after few months and I threw them away. USB phones are more economical solutions (some are free-after-rebate) than others, however, the quality of the calls vary by the makers. The computer was my least favorite option, since I do not want to make a call right in front of a monitor.
When I ordered the IPEVO USB handset for Skype, I was intrigued by its beautiful look in the first place. After I received the IPEVO, I found that this phone is the prettiest phone I ever have. When it comes to the quality of the calls, I can say that no other Skype phone can be good as this even including a headset and a computer combination. The clarity of the sound coming out from IPEVO is perfect. As of today, I have been using this phone more than a year (maybe more than 2 years, I don't rembmer) and it still shows the same great sound quality like the first day. I chose black one not to get dirty easily. However, when I got the second IPEVO in white, I got an impression that it would not get ugly over the time like the products from Apple. And I was right.
Now this IPEVO phone is my first recommendation whenever my friends ask me about the good Skype phone. If it is a wireless Skype phone (with the same clear sound quality), it couldn't be better. However, I still love this product so much with a dangling cord. This is the best Skype investment I have made other than the Skype service itself.
Thank you IPEVO. You made me a great son who loves call to dad 6,000 miles away.
