Editorial Reviews:

2005 Studio Album from the Young Progeny of Richard and Linda Thompson, who Both Makes Appearances as Well as Rufus and Martha Wainwright, the Band's Garth Hudson, Jenni Muldaur (Daughter of Maria Muldaur) and Many Others. As the Times of London Exclaimed, "not Since Jackson Browne Issued from 1970s California a Succession of Mournful Masterpieces Has a Songwriter So Completely Nailed the Sense That, in Every Celebration, the Sense of Imminent Regret Hovers... Brilliant...". Or If that Isn't Enough, Q Magazine States, "Finely Crafted Songs...effortless Grace"

Summary: Teddy Thompson Separate Ways
Comment: Teddy Thompsons captures the roots feel of sixties folk country
The first four tracks are excellent especially "I wish It Was Over"
The secret to record sales is airplay and that song was featured on TV as part of a summer concert. The last eight tracks are a little sombre and melancholic, but four out of twelve is better than most albums. This young man has future as a singer songwriter.

Summary: Nearly great
Comment: Let me start by saying that this isn't normally the kind of music I choose to listen to but sometimes you need an album that's warm, melodic and nakedly emotional for some late night atmosphere. Separate Ways by Teddy Thompson certainly fits that description on all three counts and is a rewarding experience in the right moment. In many ways the songs here are fine examples of the timelessness of great songwriting and all have nice arrangements that aren't subject to the whims of music producer fashions and will suit a relaxed late night mood to perfection.

When listening to these twelve finely crafted examples of the songwriter's art it's inevitable that I'm reminded of Richard Thompson and the drawing together of influences from folk, rock and country and the creation of a sound that bears the stamp of each but won't be allow itself to be pigeonholed into any specific genre. But, unlike his famous father, Teddy Thompson's songs are consistent throughout the disc and while there may not be any absolute classics to match the Richard Thompson's truly great songs, there isn't any of his mediocre filler either.

The music here also has elements that remind me of people like Gram Parsons, Ron Sexsmith, Maria McKee, Eleanor McEvoy, Ryan Adams, Neil Finn, Chris Isaak and a whole host of singers and musicians working in a similar rock/country crossover area and for anyone with the undeniable talent of Teddy Thompson there is definitely going to be a successful future ahead. If you like any of the artists mentioned above then you'll certainly like what you hear on Separate Ways.

My single criticism of the album, and the reason for only rating it at four stars, is that despite the obvious quality of the songs, the clean production and the faultless performances, overall the album feels to have something missing. It's a touch too delicate and hesitant and just seems to lack the bite that would have made it step up to being a great album rather than just being the good one that it is.

Comment: (i originally posted this on amazon.co.uk, but i thought it should get posted up here aswll)

I got this cd on a whim as i had never heard of him or his famous mother and father before and i just thought that the reviews on the cover sounded good, but I'm sure glad i picked this one up.
It's a very interesting mixture of country music and feel good rock songs; i especially love the song "Altered State" it's a brilliant upbeat, happy sounding song. Another of my favourites is "No Way To Be" as i think it sends out a very good message. I've only had this cd about two days now, and i truely love it already.
Every note of music and guitar/drums, whatever may be playing in any song at any particular moment fits perfectly.
I'm not very good at writing these reviews, and i havent done so in a while, but be sure that if you're looking for a good, happy-sounding cd to really brighten up your day you really can't go wrong with this one, this really truly is a brilliant cd(!!!!) and I'd definatley say to check it out especially at the price its at now you simply cant go wrong.
I'll be sure to check out his debut cd very, very soon!
Brilliant find!!

Summary: Teddy Thompson: British country music artist
Comment: Teddy Thompson's sound is reminiscent of of Graham Parsons and Jackson Brown. His voice is one, upon hearing it for the first time, that is headsnapiing. One is compelled to as "Who is this guy?"

If you like Graham Parsons or Jackson Brown at their prime, you'll love Teddy Thompsom.

Comment: Mr Thompson latest release has some awesome songs that stand out with his voice sound awesome & awesome arrangements & awesome musicianship & they are songs 2&4 & 6-8. The rest of the songs feel out of place that just not the right material for his voice & there just fair to so so. So id pass this CD up & wait til the next cd he puts out is different with more songs that would suite his voice that would be awesome.
