The "cole" in cole slaw comes from the Dutch word "koolsla" which comes from the Latin "caulis". Confused yet? All you really need to know is all three of those terms mean "cabbage" and, in this form, it's the perfect compliment to BBQ. That's because cole slaw is cool, creamy and non acidic.
