Why use a permanent filter? For one thing you won't experience that painful moment of truth when you realize you have to face the day without a java fix because you forgot to put paper filters on your grocery list. For another stainless steel filters extract the most flavor from your coffee. They are environmentally friendly and they save you money in the long run. There now, all that should have you convinced!

Customer Rating: Summary: gold tone filter Comment: This has changed the way I make coffee now. One its reusable so its GREEN. And two it makes way better coffee than those paper filters hands down.
Everyone should have this!
Customer Rating: Summary: No good for fine grounds Comment: This filter seems like a good idea but in practice it allows far too many fine grounds to enter the pot. This drastically changes the flavor of the coffee and makes the last few cups in the pot completely undrinkable. I suppose if I had a burr grinder I could adjust the grind to be less fine but I have a normal spinning blade grinder that has served me well and makes great tasting coffee otherwise.
I am sticking with my Melitta #4 Natural Brown paper filters.
Customer Rating: Summary: Krups 049-33 Gold Tone Filter Comment: We bought the Krups gold tone filter for our new coffee pot so we wouldn't have to fool with paper filters. It's great! Easy to clean and a very fine mesh to catch the grinds.
Customer Rating: Summary: Useless Comment: This filter is useless. I am extremely happy with the Krups KM7000 coffee maker now that I figured out what the culprit was (this filter). The filter does a terrible job of filtering out what I will call "coffee-mud". I was always getting a thick residue in the bottom of the pot and unless I made extra and carefully poured, I'd end up with this gunk in my cup. I still use the filter, but I use it with a traditional paper filter. Not sure if there is a need for this filter at all since I'm using a paper filter, but I like to think I'm getting some use for my $10.
Customer Rating: Summary: This filter is great! Comment: I usually need to replace my filter around every two years, and it would probably last longer if I wasn't such a klutz washing it. Not bad for daily use!
