In an era when elaborate wordplay and adventurous production were the order of the day, Herb Alpert made an impact barely uttering a word or breaking a mold, other than expanding the commercial parameters for pop instrumentalists. Dashing trumpeter Alpert and his Tijuana Brass scored five top-20 hits between 1962 (when "The Lonely Bull" climbed to No. 11 in the U.S.) and 1968 (when the vocal-driven "This Guy's in Love with You" cracked the top 10), racking up five No. 1 albums over the same period. The group's patented "Ameriachi" sound made up in south-of-the-border sprightliness what it lacked in innovation; the likes of "Spanish Flea" and "Casino Royale" possessed the kind of unshakable hooks that fit perfectly on top-40 radio sandwiched between Nancy Sinatra and the Mamas & the Papas. This 20-track overview serves up 13 selections from the Tijuana Brass's heyday and is rounded up with seven Alpert solo selections, including comeback hits from 1979 ("Rise") and '87 ("Diamonds"). --Steven Stolder

Customer Rating: Summary: Great collection of hits Comment: My record player broke a few years ago and I really missed playing all my Tijuana Brass albums. This CD fixes the problem. I just wish it had better cover art. I love the photos and fonts on the old albums.
Customer Rating: Summary: Still Sounds Great ! ! ! Comment: Anyone who was around for the Tijuana Brass era will love their contribution to this CD. However.....you have to be a jazz fan (which I am) to enjoy the 2nd portion of this CD. The differences are almost contradictory. The A&M "Classics, Vol 1" would be perfect for the casual fan. Of course, the remastered version is better quality than "Classics."
Customer Rating: Summary: A Very Good Way To Listen To Alpert Comment: I still have the original A&M 45rpm single of The Lonely Bull I bought in the record bin of a dime store in Jacksonville Fla in 1963. I have always loved that first record, and while my parents were bigger fans of the rest of the early hits from the '60's than I was, I find it a treat to listen to them now on this disc. Throw in a couple of the later numbers, especially Rise, and this is well forth the price.
Customer Rating: Summary: Enough of the "HITS" already! Comment: I don't mean to be cranky, but this CD disappointed me personally. I've been longing to see Herb's 80's work on CD - they contain some amazing music. With the recent re-release of "RISE", I'm anticipating other titles from the 80's like, "Magic Man", "Fandango", "Blow Your Own Horn", "Wild Romance", etc. This stuff is as Definitive as it gets!
Customer Rating: Summary: superb...excellent...brought back many pleasant memories Comment: I TRULY LOVED THIS DEFINITIVE HITS ALBUM FROM HERB ALPERT....IT MUST HAVE COME FROM OVERSEAS BECAUSE ITUNES. RHAPHSODY...NO ONE ELSE HAD IT...IT WAS AN EXCELLENT ROAD COMPANION FOR A LONG DRIVE TRIP I TOOK TO ARIZONA...DUNNO HOW I WOULD HAVE MADE IT...WITHOUT HERB AND THE BAND...
