Editorial Reviews:

About the Gator Knife from Gerber
The Gator knife from Gerber offers performance that's completely indifferent to the weather, with its thermoplastic grip that mimics an alligator's skin texture to deliver an amazingly secure, reliable, and comfortable grip. Loaded with high-end professional features, the Gator has a drop-point blade with a convex curve bending towards the point. This gives you the maximum amount of effective cutting edge for slicing, making it an ideal choice for fishing, hunting, rock climbing, or any other kind of outdoors enthusiast.

If there's a tough cutting job to be tackled, this folding blade is up to the task. And that's not just Gerber's ad people talking. Back in 1991 when the Gator folders were introduced at Blade Show, attendees there named this Gerber creation the "Most Innovative Knife of the Year." And it's still every bit as popular today.

Gerber's History of Ingenuity
Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular, Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.

It makes sense, really. An idea man gets the idea of a lifetime and turns it into a major outdoor brand -- one that commands respect among knife-lovers and knife-makers alike. And now that same high regard is spreading in new directions, in the form of many outstanding products such as tools, personal L.E.D. lighting, and backpack hydration.

Summary: Best Knife Ever!
Comment: I actually bought this knife for my husband, who lost one just like it on a job site. He says it's the best knife there is.

Summary: Good knife until the blade breaks!
Comment: I had this knife on my belt everyday for 3 months. I used it frequently to cut rope, vines, sharpen sticks, etc. It was a great knife and I even worked it enough where I could flip the blade open one-handed. Then I dropped it onto a 2x4 from waist high, and the tip of the blade broke off, half an inch worth, rendering it mostly useless. I have not bought a Gerber since. If you want a multi-tool, Gerber is a good option, but if you want a trustworthy knife, I'd look at Spyderco or maybe a Kershaw.

Summary: Absolutely stellar belt knife.
Comment: Gerber (A Fiskars Company) put out some of the best knives for the money in the market. Fiskars is my favorite scissors company and everything I've used of their stuff is top notch - so this is a good combo.

I have this knife in the partially serrated version. It is 8.75" long when open, 5" when closed, and the blade is 3.75". If you have the serrated model, the first 1.5" is serrated. The remaining smooth blade hones nicely and stays sharp. Gerber 650 &Portland, OR U.S.A are printed on either side of the blade.

The grip is exceptional. The Kraton handle is very tough and offers superior traction and grip with it's rubbery feeling alligator finish. It has a notch for the index finger and the butt curves down to fit your other fingers very comfortably. It feels like a part of your hand when you hold it and is balanced nicely for a folder. It simply stays in your hand when you want it there.

The lock is solid with a lever-lock cog/pin system in the backside. The cordura/nylon belt sheath has a velcro closure that has some adjustability to it. Mine is several years old now and I still love this knife. For this price, it's an amazing buy. There are knives that cost 3 or 4 times as much that don't feel nearly as good. The steel could be a little harder, but it holds its edge admirably.

They came out with this over a decade ago and you can still find it and it's popular. I think that says a lot. I haven't used the ones with the hook point (sinew cutter for hunting, cutting rope etc.) but they seem virtually identical.

The only thing this knife is missing is an ambidextrous notch for quick opening. I give it 4.5 stars, rounding up for price/performance ratio and fantastic quality and grip.

Comment: I first became acquainted with Gerber knives in the 70's when I joined the 82nd Airborne Division. Every paratrooper in sight carried a Gerber survival knife. I've been a fan of Gerber ever since. I have owned many other brands of knives, but never found one to match the Gerbers in quality or craftsmanship. The Gator knife is the latest addition to my collection, and is my favorite hunting knife. Hones razor sharp and holds its edge. Extremely comfortable and easy to use, even with a wet handle. You won't be disappointed with this one
