Now we have Greatest Hits, a 22-song collection of Cooke's pop hits in addition to the 13-song Best Of collection and the 28-song The Man and His Music. Only The Man comes close to presenting a complete portrait of the legendary soul singer: At least there are examples of Cooke's gospel and R&B material. (Any collection without "A Change is Gonna Come" is an automatic failure.) Cooke's melodious voice and deft songwriting touch are worthy of more than a single-disc compilation. If you want just the pop smashes, the sublime ballads, and infectious mellow grooves, this set will suffice. Otherwise, The Man offers a more comprehensive and well-rounded look at Cooke's legacy. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Rating: Summary: soul searching Comment: I knew what I wanted...one song that was hard to find. It turns out that I like the entire CD...not at all surprising considering this is Sam Cooke. I own a lot of Sam Cooke music and I admit there may be a song or two that I skip over, but it's hard to resist the sound of Sam's legendary voice. I was thrilled that I was able to find this on Amazon. The CD is new and arrived in the amount of time stated, and I got it at a great price.
Customer Rating: Summary: Just OK Comment: Not the best Sam Cooke work that I have purchased. OK, but nothing special.
Customer Rating: Summary: Sam Cooke's CD Comment: I am impressed with the availability of this legendary item. The timing with the shipping and receiving is awesome. Thank you very much for your services.
Customer Rating: Summary: A Great Composer Comment: Probably the most underrated song writer since Harry Warren. This CD is not quite as comprehensive as I should have wished
Customer Rating: Summary: One Of The Better Sam Cooke Volumes Available Comment: When RCA came out with one of their first CDs on the late, great Sam Cooke, the magnificent The Man And His Music, I was fortunate enough to get a copy before it was inexplicably allowed to go out of print. As a collector of hit singles, and at a time when finding them in their original format in any great quantity in one volume, I was fortunate indeed to get 19 of his 43 Billboard Pop Top/Hot 100 hits in that one neat package.
Finding the remaining 24 wasn't so easy, however. Oh, over the years one or two of his would crop up in multi-artist compilations, but another quality Sam Cooke volume just didn't seem to be available. In 1991 I did come across a 14-track issue from Woodford Music as part of their Silver Collection series which gave me two (Summertime and Lonely Island from his Kent years) but that was it (and that volume does not appear anywhere in Amazon's catalogue).
Then came this release from RCA in February 1998 which, although repeating 13 of the hits found in A Man And His Music, does add eight more in immaculate sound and in a package that includes six pages of detailed background notes by the best in the business, the noted author and music critic Joseph F. Laredo.
The only fault to find with this release is the use of brown text on an amber background on the reverse, where they list the contents, and on the back of the insert where the same listing also provides information on the recording dates and orchestras involved. SMALL beige print on a brown background makes it extremely hard to read for us older collectors whose eyesight has long since seen better days. Why do they do that anyway?
