Editorial Reviews:

Neville Marriner's 1976 account of the Covent Garden version of the score (1743), with the Academy and Chorus of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and soloists Elly Ameling, Anna Reynolds, Philip Langridge, and Gwynne Howell, is positively plush-sounding but nicely animated. I'd love to have this kind of string tone for, say, the Dvorák Serenade, but for Handel it may be just a bit much. --Ted Libbey

Summary: Great Recording
Comment: I enjoy the Messiah more then any other "Christmas" music available. I have heard a number of recordings, but this is one of my favorites. I am a bit biased, but "Since by Man Came Death" is a big determining factor on how the Chorus actually performs. This rendition is amazing. Crystal clear soprano, strong alto, clean tenor, and a powerful bass makes for a great soft & loud sound.

I also prefer this version over the "final" version of the Messiah. The solos are different but much more free and fun. If you are looking to purchase a copy - this is for you.

Summary: Uplifting, fantastic, beautiful
Comment: The academy and chorus of St. Martin-In-The-Fields, directed by Sir Neville Marriner deliver what can no doubt be considered *the* definitive version of Handel's "Messiah". This cd contains their performance of the London version, circa 1743. I don't know if I have enough superlatives in my vocabulary to do this cd justice. It's a beautiful performance, very reverent and done with a great deal of love and care. You simply cannot go wrong with purchasing this cd. It's awesome.

Summary: The Definitive Messiah!
Comment: I have this Messiah in several mediums, most recently on MP3. This is the best interpretation of Handel's most famous work. Ely Ameling is superb! The tempos are perfect - brisk and lively, and the chorus is on pitch, not dragging, and, thank goodness, not shouting and screaming, but singing beautifully. If you can afford only one recording of the Messiah, this is the recording to purchase.

Summary: stellar performance - except for alto
Comment: Sir Marriner delivers once again in this authentic version of Messiah. Recording sounds great, except I find myself skipping to the next chapter whenever the alto is singing.. where did they find this tone-deaf alto? (Primary reason for 4 stars) Otherwise, no complaints.

Summary: Totally Inspired
Comment: Listening to this rendition of the Messiah will cause you to believe in God even if you didn't before -- what else but divine inspiration could create this sound?
