Summary: Must-Have Four Seasons
Comment: In a sea of Four Seasons recordings, Gil Shahmam's version is perhaps the one that stands out in my mind the most. His playing is flawless and tasteful: the vurtoso passages are never over-the top but they aren't blase either and he is very lyrical in the slow movements. Mr. Shaham works well with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and their choice of dynamics creates excitment and adds to the emotional depth of these concerti. Their orchestra/solo balance is perfect and I might also mention that DG recording on this one is superb. Gil Shaham and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra play these pieces like they are bonafide masterpieces rather than elevator music.

Summary: A Revelation Amongst Many Disappointments
Comment: As has been noted by many of the reviewers already, there is a huge discography for this work by the most incredible violinists of the past century. Many of these recordings are elegant, exciting, and stunningly played by great soloists and orchestras. However, if I had to choose one I would have no problem choosing this before any. The main reason here is not simply the utterly brilliant playing of Shaham (I am in love with the sound of his violin) but rather the virtuoso performance by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. No other orchestra has traversed the sheer range of nuance and dynamics that this orchestra has demonstrated here. Listen to the gleeming sound of the first movement of Spring and then here the rosin fly on the close of the first movement of winter. Shaham not only demonstrates elegance and nuance, clearly understanding the charming with and character of this music, but he also infuses the music with a visceral passion that breathes new life into this well-worn music. The partnership of these two is really something unique as well as Orpheus matches him in every gesture and phrase. Hearing their string section I get the feeling any one of them could stand up and take Shaham's place at a moment's notice and not miss a beat, cellos included! Great sound and brilliant performances make this the top of the list for me!

Summary: THE Best 4 Seasons I've Heard
Comment: This is beautiful from start to finish. The vitality and color really captures the spirit of Vivaldi/Four Seasons.

Often, I just go "WHOA" at music that speaks to me, which I've done on practically every single track here.

Summary: Inspirational Recording
Comment: Like many others, I have loved the Four Seasons so much over time, that I've played it to death. It had become so farmiliar that it was actually somewhat irritating. Listening to this recording changed all that for me. To use a tired phrase, it was like hearing the piece for the first time. The performance is precise, yet passionate. The orchestration may be considered by some to be a little thin, but that is made up for by the exillerating clarity. Finally, the technical quality of this recording is extraudinary. One more tired phrase, if you'll permit me, it's like sitting front row center at a live performance. Buy it! You'll love it!!

Summary: A great piece of work
Comment: I don't pretend to understand all the nuances of classical music. But as a listener I really enjoy it. That said, this piece by Gil is a fantastic piece. I have heard several other "Four Season" recordings, and since I have listened to this one, there are no equals (to me anyway).
