Editorial Reviews:

Kathy Mattea's lovely, strong vocals, coupled with uplifting arrangements, make Good News an especially rich and deep spiritual testament. "There's a New Kid in Town" is the highpoint of this 1993 outing, but "Christ Child's Lullaby" and the title track really showcase the soulful and smart Mattea. In time, this might prove to be a seasonal country classic. --Martin Keller

Summary: Terrific Album
Comment: I bought a signed copy of this CD at a Kathy Mattea Concert back in October, when she came to the Jefferson Center in Roanoke. We actually got to meet and talk to Kathy after the show. I really enjoyed listening to this CD during the Holiday season this year. I already knew afew of these songs. "Mary did you know," for sure. But I had also heard Robin and Linda Williams sing "Brightest and Best," and Nothing But a Child," so I knew I'd love this album. As I look at the CD cover online, I can almost see Kathy's autograph to me. Thanks, Kathy!

Summary: Not a "traditional" Christmas collection
Comment: This is a great Christmas album that is NOT full of cheesy holiday tunes. As the title implies, all songs are religiously themed about the birth of Jesus. "Mary Did You Know?" is probably the best know, but the rest are all beautiful. A must have for any Kathy Mattea fan. Her rich alto is a different sound in the world of country music.

Summary: All-Time Favorite
Comment: Kathy Mattea's Good News album: her beautiful voice + non-traditional song choices + Christmas music that is truly about Christ = my all-time favorite Christmas album.

Summary: 15 year favorite
Comment: We've listened to this beautiful music since seeing several songs performed on Kathy Lee Gifford's Christmas Special in 1994. Kathy Mattea only exceeded our enjoyment of it when we saw her perform in person 5 years ago. Not only did she sing with passion, but she believes every word is the Gospel truth! We order more copies every year and distribute them as gifts for Christmas. Thank you, Kathy and musicians!

Summary: Not just the best Christmas album I've ever heard...
Comment: ...it is the best album of any genre -- period. Each track has a gravity and sincerity to it that is unique, particularly in today's musical climate. There is also a theological depth to some of the songs that, again, is altogether unique, especially in a world where songs that are (ostensibly at least) about the birth of the Son of God treat the occasion with anything but the reverence it/He deserves. (Pay particular attention to tracks 1, 3, and 10 in this regard.) I gave it five stars. I'd give it twice that if I could. Give it a listen. It puts Christ squarely at the center of Christmas, where He belongs.
