Customer Rating: Summary: Emo Philips = Comic Genius! Comment: Emo Philips is definitely not your typical guy. He wears off-beat clothes. His speech is slow. The only thing stranger than his haircut is the way his body moves. He's NOT the normal mainstream comic. However, for people willing to spend a little time watching him, his "weirdness" will grow on you and you'll realize that's what makes him a comic genius.
Emo doesn't use a lot of foul language, so this is something that's ok to watch with the kids. Younger kids won't get it - but my teenager thinks he's funny (although he won't admit it - he cracks up when he thinks no one is watching). His comedic style is unlike anyone else's - if pressed, I would put him with Stephen Wright. He's a 180 from Eddie Murphy or Dave Chappelle. Even though I would compare Emo's dead-pan humor with Mr Wright's, they are on totally different levels as far as funniness goes. While on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the funniest) Mr Wright may rank as a 4, Emo is off the chart!
This probably isn't a "movie" you'd watch over and over (unless you dig dead-pan humor like I do), it's definitely worth the price and a great way to spend an hour. Emo comes up with the funniest surprise lines - and takes his act to places you didn't see coming. Bizarre is a great way to describe him - but I mean that only as a compliment. Emo Philips Live at the Hasty Pudding Theatre is funny enough that I saw it when it originally aired on HBO in the 80s - and almost 20 years (and an unsuccessful local search lasting several years) later, I'm thrilled to have found it here. Don't let the age put you off - this is a classic that will still be hilarious in another 20 years!
