In this clever speculative tale, story collaborators Karl Alexander and Steve Hayes and screenwriter-director Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II and VI) send two famous historical figures ahead in time. In late 19th century England, writer H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) unwittingly includes Jack the Ripper (David Warner) in his social circle. When one of Wells's dinner parties is crashed by the police looking for the Ripper, Jack uses the author's time machine to escape. But there's one catch--after it has been used, the machine returns to Wells's time. Thus the literary genius bravely sets out to find his evil friend before he can wreak havoc on another time period, and soon arrives in modern-day San Francisco. What follows is a fascinating merger of a suspense thriller--as the charming and polite Wells tries to hunt down the shrewd, brutish Ripper and take him back to the past--and a love story, as Wells befriends and falls in love with a bank administrator (Mary Steenburgen) who acts as his guide through the future. Summary: Finally on DVD, OH yes!!!
Comment: Well it has been many years since I saw this film but I loved it every time I saw it. Pretty sure I caught it on the big screen and then later on HBO or TV and maybe even rented once or twice. Now I'm going to buy this DVD and enjoy it many more times. Like the other person says, great acting, and story. Keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way. Just get this film and you will enjoy it.

Summary: Great gem of a movie & Excellent anamorphic widescreen transfer to DVD
Comment: This 1979 movie is a real gem--it has something for every taste--thriller--science fiction--murder mystery--romance--a little comedy--victorian London--modern-day San Francisco (well, 1979). Excellent casting, great performances by all involved--attention to historical detail. My review is based on the Sept. 2, 2008 DVD edition.
The transfer to DVD is quite impressive--in particular for a relatively old film and for one that was not considered to be remastered. Its anamorphic widescreen transfer to DVD looks as good as most new films in my collection--almost as good as my HD DVDs. Great colors, sharp, clean picture, and excellent sound. The image has been enhanced for 16x9 aspect ratio, large screen, high-defintion TVs, so the image fills the entire screen. I have not seen any previous DVD edition of this movie, so I cannot comment on any possible upgrade in this latest, 2008 transfer.
This is the type of movie you will watch again and again, so it is a worthwhile addition to your DVD collection. Highly recommended!

Summary: H.G. Wells meets Jack the Ripper

That sounds a little corny, but I'll try anything with Malcolm McDowell in it. David Warner as the bad guy seems to be the perfect role for him as an actor. The "babe" in this film, well, maybe not a "babe", but the "woman of interest" here is Mary Steenburgen. I've come to notice that she seems to like films about time travel. You'll remember that she was also the school teacher in the 1800's in "Back To The Future III". I still think that "The Time Machine" from 1960 is far better than this film, but this one is better than the 2002 version of "The Time Machine".
This movie is worth renting, but Malcolm McDowall had a better film just a couple years later. He was really cool and creepy in 1982's "Cat People." Of course, his best is still "A Clockwork Orange."

Summary: A Good Movie
Comment: The special effects may be crappy for this day and age but that doesn't stop this movie from being a classic. The new version with Guy Pierce may have better special effects but overall I feel this one is a better overall story. You can say it's a time travel movie with a twist. Just get it, you'll see.

Summary: A suspenseful sci-fi thriller!
Comment: I was a bit skeptical when I first saw the premise of this movie - many time travel movies fail to deliver but this was an exception. The movie stars Malcolm McDowell who plays H.G. Wells, the famous author who is enjoying a dinner at home with some of his acquaintances and tells them about a time machine that he has built. The setting is late 19th century London, the same period of the infamous Jack the Ripper who also happens to be one of H.G. Well's dining guests. When the police come knocking, Jack pulls a disappearing act in Wells' time machine and it is left to Wells to follow the killer through time into the future, 1979 San Francisco to be exact.
Mary Steenburgen plays a bank clerk who meets both Jack [played to chilling effect by David Warner] and Wells [a very convincing Malcolm McDowell] and falls for Wells, not knowing who he really is. Though the movie is dated, as it is an older movie and the effects are a bit underwhelming, the credible acting by the main leads and well-written story makes for entertaining and suspenseful viewing. There is a bit of romance [Wells and Amy the bank clerk], lots of thrills and a score that truly brings the 70s to mind. All in all, well worth one's time if you like 'period' thrillers with a time travel element.
