Customer Rating: Summary: Meh. Comment: The workouts are okaaayyy (and I do appreciate the fact they're segmented), but it is clearly for those who are new to exercising. If you're just starting to work out, this will be a great DVD. If you've been exercising prior to getting pregnant, this DVD will bore you.
Customer Rating: Summary: For those who complain about it being outdated... Comment: I did this workout when I was pregnant with my first child, when it was only available on VHS. (I now have 3 children, and my oldest is now 9 years old, so I was doing this workout 10 years ago.)
It was recently put on dvd format, and many are complaining that the music, leotards, and decor are outdated.
I wanted to comment that Kathy Smith filmed this workout when she was pregnant herself, so unless she gets pregnant again, there is really no way for her to be pregnant and lead a pregnancy workout...
So yes, the leotards and hairstyles are outdated, but I don't think Kathy wants to get pregnant again 15 years (give or take) after she had her last one just to make an updated dvd. *smiling*
The workout, however, is effective, and safe for pregnant women-which is what it all boils down to.
Customer Rating: Summary: Easy to customize! Comment: It's really easy to skip from chapter to chapter on this dvd and make the workout as long or short as you want. There are three 20 minute aerobic segments to choose from and then several target toning segments. I would like more stretching (a few yoga poses would be perfect!). It does get your heart rate going. If you can get over the cheesy early 90s color scheme/decor, its a good workout.
Customer Rating: Summary: GREAT Prenatal Workout...my favorite Comment: I absolutely recommend this video (as my OB, a mother of 2, recommended to me)! The intensity level is perfect for pregnancy. I felt that I got an especially good workout in the 2nd and 3rd trimester. You can easily intensify or tone down the workout if need be. As all pregnant women know...it depends on the day! The video covers all of the bases; stretching, aerobics, arm and leg toning, and relaxation. Another plus is that if you already have children, this is a workout they can participate in with you.
I personally have a hard time with the all too bubbly instructor. Kathy Smith is not that way. Its refreshing that she is quite normal and quite tolerable while still being motivational.
One downfall is that the video is definitely dated. If you have already been there, be prepared to relive the 80's. There are some corny moments, but if you can get past that, the video is most effective.
It is possible to finish this workout as well, unlike the "Perfect Pregnancy Workout" which is perfectly impossible when you are very pregnant or not used to a good deal of exercise. I purchased many prenatal exercise DVD's, this was by far the best.
Enjoy!
Customer Rating: Summary: If you like Kathy Smith, you'll like this. If you hate Kathy Smith, you'll hate this Comment: I admit I have a love/hate relationship with Kathy Smith.
She's an excellent instructor. She puts together a cohesive workout. She makes it easy to follow. She puts in useful tips. She knows what she's talking about. If you're a beginner, she's an excellent choice.
But at the same time, while the workout is fairly sound, the overall program in dire need of updating. It's stripped pretty much right off the old VHS setting...but a little reorganizing could make it much more seamless. The music is inoffensive, but so much so it irritates me. It's very 80's-style...but that was 20 years ago. Can't we handle something new?
The other problem I have is that while this is ideal for many women, I found it simply way too easy. I know workouts for pregnancy tend to be on the conservative side...I understand. But I've been aerobically active and dancing most of my life; just being pregnant didn't mean I had to make a tremendous drop in my workout routine. Even my OB/GYN agreed I could handle something a bit more energetic.
FINALLY, KILL THE RAP SEGMENT. I'm sorry, those women have no right to inflict a camp skit on me every time I work out. It's was kinda cute the first time. Now it just sets my teeth on edge. I can't believe a workout video would put this right in the middle.
