Tipping customs change in different parts of the world and even in different parts of the US. In New York City, one is expected to tip for many services and even when services are not provided. Places where you select and take your own merchandise to the cashier will often have a tip jar handy. While it's not as expected in such places, others like taxicabs will expect a tip no matter how long or short the ride or how good a ride it was. In other parts of the US, tipping is not as common and therefor not expected as much as in the bigger cities. In some countries, tipping is not considered polite and we heartily recommend that when traveling far from home, whether domestically or internationally, you read a good guidebook to learn about this important issue.
