Bar Measurements
It is important that you understand the total amount of a cocktail you are making before you measure ingredients. At Epicurus.com, we cite cocktail recipes for one person most of the time.

Another thing to keep in mind is using ice in a shaker. Be very careful not to keep the ice in a shaker longer than the time for chilling the ingredients in order to avoid watering down the cocktail.

Basic Measurements:
1 dash = 4 to 5 drops
1 teaspoon = 1/8 oz
3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon
1 tablespoon = 1/2 oz
1 pony = 1 oz
1 jigger = 1 1/2 oz
1 cup = 8 oz
1/2 fresh lime = 1/2 oz
1/2 fresh lemon = 1/2 to 3/4 oz

Ounces (oz): Most cocktail liquid ingredients are measured by ounces (oz) in the United States and in the United Kingdom. You may use a jigger to measure the ingredients. Most steel jiggers allow you to measure by 1 1/2 oz. on one end and 3/4 oz. on the other end. Glass jiggers usually have only one size. 1 oz = 2 tbsp

Dash: This measurement is often used for tiny amount of liquid ingredients for cocktail recipes. For instance, Epicurus.com uses this measurement for bitters.

Teaspoon (tsp): One teaspoon of liquid amounts about 1/5 oz. Epicurus.com uses teaspoon measurements for small amounts of liquid or powered ingredients such as sugar or other ingredients. Some bars use bar spoons instead of teaspoon, but the measurement is about the same. Most barspoons have a twisted handle.

1 tsp = 1/6 oz, 1/3 tbsp

Tablespoon (tbsp): One tablespoon of liquid is about 3/5 oz. Epicurus.com uses tablespoon measurements for the same reasons for the use of the teaspoon.

1 tbsp = 1/2 oz, 3 tsp

Cup: One cup equals 8 fluid oz. When serving more than 2 person, a measuring cup becomes very handy.
