- EMERALD RIESLING
- White-wine hybrid variety developed by H. C. Olmo of UC Davis from a crossing of Muscadelle de Bordelais and (White) Riesling. Probably the most successful of the attempts to breed high quality/quantity white-wine grapes for specific use in California.
- EMIR
- Variety grown in Turkey where it is used to create a modest white-wine varietal or blends with such other varietal wines as Narince and Semmilon. No other details as yet.
- En primeur
- A method of purchasing wine before it has been bottled. Payment (not including duty or VAT) is made generally a year or so before bottling (the exact time depends on the region. The wines most common offered en primeur are from Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhone Valley and Port, although many other regions, including some New World wineries, are following suit. Once the wine enters the UK, it may be stored in bond or, after payment of taxes, be delivered. - ENANTIO
- Has synonym names Lambrusca Nostrano and Lambrusca a Folglia Frastagliata. Reported as grown in the Trentino region of Italy where it is used to make a full-bodied, fruity red wine.
- ENFARINÉ
- This variety has several synonym names including Gouais Noir. No other details as yet other than the variety is possibly yet another result of a Pinot cepage x Gouais Blanc cross in the distant past and is grown in France where it is used to create a red wine.
- Enology
- The science of winemaking; also spelled oenology.
- Enophile
- Someone who enjoys and appreciates fine wine; also spelled oenophile.
- Entry
- A tasting term. Describing the wine on 'entry' is to describe your impression of the wine as it lands in your mouth. Followed by midpalate, finish and length.
- ERBALUCE
- Minor grape grown in the Piedmont region of Italy and used to make dry white wine. Better known for the full-bodied, sweet wine versions made with dried grapes, (i.e Passito). Also a fortified version with 16 percent alcohol, (i.e Liquoroso).
- ERMITAGE
- Synonym name for the white-wine Marsanne grape where grown in Switzerland.
- Erzeugerabfüllung (Germany)
- Means bottled by the producer. Related terms include abfüllung and gutsabfüllung.
- ESGANA (CĂO)
- Synonym for the Sercial grape widely grown on the island of Madeira and known as Cerceal where grown in Portugal.
- ESPADEIRO
- Red-wine grape grown in northern Portugal and also in bordering Galicia, Spain. Mostly used in "vinho verde", young wines for early drinking.
- Essence (see also Nose Below)
- 1. Refers to "odour kits" containing vials of representative flavour essence.
2. Used occasionally by wineries to describe a late harvest, sweet red wine. Most frequently appears on bottle labels for Zinfandel red wine made from grapes picked at 35 deg. Brix or higher sugar content.
- Essencia (Hungary)
- The free run juice of the Aszú. See Aszú Essencia.
