Fermentation
Workers gather the tobacco leaves in large piles (bulk) after the harvest.The leaves are moistened and allowed to ferment.Temperatures may reach 140? inside the bulk before it is taken apart and restacked, temporarily halting the fermentation process.This process, called working the bulk, releases the ammonia from tobacco.

Fermentation
A necessary process in the development of cigar tobacco. Tobacco is moistened and placed into large bulks where it then ferments. This process releases ammonia from the tobacco and is continued until the fermentation stops naturally.

Figurado
A Spanish term that refers to cigars with exotic sizes, such as torpedos, pyramids, perfectos, and culebras.

Filler
The individual tobacco leaves used in the body of a cigar, a pile of such tobacco would be called a bunch.

Filler
The blended tobaccos that form the inner core of the cigar. The filler accounts for most of the flavor and quality of the cigar. High-grade cigars are made with long fillers, or whole leaves running the length of the cigar, which are hand-rolled. Low-grade cigars use short fillers, or scraps of lesser quality tobaccos, which are fed into a machine.

Filler Leaves
The tobacco leaves used in the body of the cigar. A good premium cigar usually contains between two and five different types of filler tobacco.

Finish
A term which refers to the taste that lingers on your palate after a puff.

Flag
An alternative to a cap. The flag method of finishing a cigar involves shaping the wrapper leaf at the head of the cigar so it secures the wrapper. Sometimes it is tied off in a pigtail or a curly head.

Flag Leaves
An extension of the wrapper leaf shaped to finish the head of a cigar. A technique used instead of using a cap. Flags are sometimes tied off in a pigtail or a curly head.

Foot
The end of the cigar you light. Most often it is pre-cut, except in the case of torpedos and perfectos.

The end of the cigar that is lit; sometimes also called a tuck.

The open end of the cigar that you light. With figurado (torpedo-shaped) cigars where both ends are tapered, examine the cigar carefully to find the small aperture which indicates the foot.
